ok help me out I've read the tips and guides on mining and yet it is painfully slow...so slow that I've not even collected enough to outfit my Y-8 yet I'm also reading reports that this ship is not an effecive miner anyway /sigh
first off What use does the tractor beam have and how does it work?? I've read the threads about it but mine doesn't seem to do anything at all? let alone hold the chunk still?
are there any tricks (not exploits) you've found to make mining more effective? Is it easier to mine from a turret can people mine in groups?

Make sure u target the broken peices, cause if the tractor beam isnt actualy on the peice it will do nothing.

make the macros listed here.
hit this macro when you shoot of a chunck. then you will follow it. wait whit blasting it until you are right behind it and close:
/ui action targetSelf
/ui action cycleTargetOutward
/follow;
this macro you have on under the whole mining:
/ship weaponGroup toggelTractor; (tractorbeam on/off)
when you have blasted the chunck in to pices hit the follow macro again. dont shoot the pices but let you tractor beam take them. then you fill up much faster than if you blasted them.
hope this helped you. i fill up a cargohold of 1550 in about 10 min whit this process.
i use the jedi fighter for mining, its great! it turns fast and are very nice to use for following the chuncks and pices.

QFE!
Im doing it exactly like this guy and i might even be a little shy of 10 minutes if no one is out there bothering me. You can also use WO3 to supercharge your mining laser to break the chunks faster. Helps with bandits too. I see these guys out there with a krayt and 3 mining lasers and it takes them twice as long as me because they turn so slow and accelerate so slow and have to keep flying around blowing up rocks instead of quickly sucking up half of them with a tractor when it explodes. Plus, these guys with 3 lasers think that smashing the momma roid 10 times and then trying to chase down 4 medium chunks is a good way to mine. All it does guys is cause lag and wastes spawns and then you have to waste time wearing down the roid condition from 3000/5000 cause you missed too many rocks.

No, you aren't the worst miner ever. That'd be me. The graphics on the tractor beam lag my visual display out, meaning I can't hit squat with it. Why they decided to make the blasts from the tractor beam and mining lasers so graphically intensive, I'll never know. What was wrong with the lasers we had?

I have noticed my mining are much more effective if I do the following :
come flying towards the asteroid and around 50% speed (usually 400).
- Shoot at the asteroid when about 500m away.
- should break of a medium chunk with 3-4 hits (using mining laser III)
- Hit the "target nearest friendly" (the key to the left of "1") and use follow. (I have remapped follow to the key "F")
- let the ship fly as close as it does on follow (usually around 100m).
- now activate tractor beam and hit the asteroid a few times untill it breaks, stop shooting with mining laser when that happens.
- as soon as the medium chunk blows, nudge upwards alittle, and watch all the small chunks be sucked in almost instantly.
- if a few chunks manage to escape, then a few minor course corrections should suck them in easily.
you should now be at about 700-900m from the mother asteroid, and you simply turn back and start all over.
Doing this is actually alot less work than it looks like, and my 1550 starfighter cargohold is usually filled in about 10-15 mins depending on asteroid bandit attacks.
When asteroid bandits attack, I always do what I can to finish the chunk and then take care of the bandits. Good shield may be required, or "Capacitor to shields shunt" if you are in a more dangerous part of space.
Im using my Rixy to mine, and it have a very bad turning rate at higher speeds, so I sometimes aim for the medium chunk before I hit "F".
One more thing, my weapons setup is like this :
Slot 1 - heavy damage weapon.
Slot 2 - Mininglaser III.
Slot 3 - Tractor beam.
im not using "toogleTractor" im simply holding button "3" and tapping at nr 2 to break up the medium one.
oh, and I have a /throttle 0.5 sitting at my F2 key, this have all my keys well with in reach of my left hand.
Im sure others mine in a way they are used to, this is simply the way I mine the most effective
