Your ship never truly completely decays.. but it can suck pretty bad to be seeing the death movie after ONE shot.. so keep an eye on the HP of your components and your chassis.
I had a couple of ships that were at 0 condition on the chassis, but I could still fly it.
Pretty sad for a tier 2 pilot to be one shotted by mos eisley police.. *laughs*
Anyway, I think this was made this way so that if you had a multiplayer ship with items on it, you could still launch and loot your ship before replacing it.
