I'm not sure what order the others here are working out loadouts in, but I see a lot of reactors being listed first. Personally, on a tight-fit ship, I do the reactor last. And I'm guaranteed to have a few "cast-off" parts for the vendor as I tweak for fine-tuning.
Let's take my A-Wing, for example. My own personal ship.
65K mass is a fair amount, but not a ton, compared to the other rebel ships. I tend to prefer speed in my flying, which is why I choose the A as my craft of choice.
I start with the engine. Looted, of course-- we all know that one. Next, I load on one of my best L7 crafted blasters, as the only looted parts i have worth loading on anything are either too low-level, or too massive, or just plain suck by comparision.
I go through my boosters, and craft one, and find that my Mark 4 with an overdriver, while massive, scores a speed of 38, blowing all of my current loot out of the water (capacity isn't important, I use a booster to run for my life over short distances, often using /iffscramble first. So getting clear fast is a big deal there.
Now, the sheild. i build a nice 1800-point, 12 recharge L7, that wedges in snugly.
Capacitor, I drag one of myy looted caps out-- doesn't matter which, with only one gun, even a crafted cap'll run an A-Wing for ages.
Looking at the mass and such at this point, I decide to try for a launcher, in this case a nice Mark 3 proton. that completed, i look at my total energy use. I find I'm sitting at just under 11K. I experiment a bit, and build a reactor with *just* enough juice to have a little surplus, and as little mass as possible. It goes really well.
At this point, i find I have room for about 6K mass remaining. that's 3K per armor facing, and i mess around until I've got something with a little protection that fits.
I've since, ended up flying Kessel loads, and I've swapped the booster for heavier armor. otherwise, she's flown very well.
