I have come across a few of these as well, and I have just matched the RE level and it worked for me.

The certification level matters. I just tried to RE a bunch of droid interfaces with high certification levels an an RE level of '1'. I tried throwing in a droid interface with a certification level of '1' and a RE level of '1' and the tool complained that this was not similar to the items already in the tool.

You wouldn't put multiple items in the tool on a RE level 1 anyhow, just try it with the one item.

ok here is how it works:

component level determines the range of stats an item can have.

if you have a RE8 part you cant put in that part 2 re4 parts EVEN if those parts are component level 8 and 5 other RE 8 parts. all the RE levels have to be the same regardless of the component level.

RE level determines how many of that same type of component it takes to RE the item. this is NOT based off component level in any way it goes SOLELY off of RE level.

the most desirable items are the low component level items with a high RE level. the reason is that when an item is RE'd it takes the best of all the stats in the items in the tool and applies a bonus. so for example if you have a uber level 8 engine that goes 100speed but has 30k mass and you want to stuff it into your Z95 your going to need to find 6 other RE level 8 engines and one low level engine with mass and energy drain you can live with. such as a component level 1 engine with a RE level of 8. this will transfer the mass and energy drain into the level 8 uber engine.

that my friends is the true power of the REverse Engineer skill.

next is how do i find these parts?? you kill tier 5 ships. they tend to drop parts with RE and component level being different more often than other NPC.

Hi

Just found following reactor on the bazaar:

Clicky

As you see it says "Certification Level: 4" but "Reverse Engineering Level: 5"...

Now I wonder...

a) Can I even RE it?

if yes:

b) Do I need 3otehr (4 total) Level 4reactors? (means the Certif. Level is important)

c) Do I need 4 other (5 total) Level 5 reactors? (means the RE level is important and counts)

anyway thats a crappy reactor. any decent shipwright can make a 1200 energy 1-1.5k mass level 1 or 2 reactor

Yeah that reactor was crap

But it was just an example had another of those (with cert4, RE 5), with around 6k mass... and a RE 5 Reactor with 15.2k output...

now i got one with 6k mass and 15.7k output

And yeah can confirm that the RE level is important not the Component level

yup thats exactly what its good for. thats the power of REing. last nite i RE'd my 92.2 engine into a 95.2 engine and dropped 5k off the mass... i also looted a RElevel 8 engine with 99.5 speed last nite now i am despereately hunting for a level 1 engine with a RE of 8 hehehe.

Hmm i think how it may work is it takes the number of items that corresponds to the highest RE level of the items you want to RE....
so if you took your RE:5 component you can reverse engineer it with 4 other RE:5 or lowers... But if you threw a RE:6 in there as one of your extra 4, you'd then need another one to make it 6...
Another question, say you have an RE:2 engine, can you throw 8 RE:2 engines in the tool and get a component with the best of stats from 8 different items? or is it max of 2?

RE has to all be SAME level and can only be that number of parts as well!!

I've come across a number of these things. Basically it works by simply matching the reverse engineering level, and then the appropriate quantity of that RE level as per usual.

Here are a couple examples.

One Cert level 4 engine I found hada RE level 2 rating, I combined it with a Cert level 2 RE level 2 engine.

Had a Cert level 7 droid interface with a RE level 1 rating, so that gets tossed in the analysis tool by itself and analyzed.

Evenlooted some items with a RE level 0 rating... can't do anything with those.
