Althought the thought of salvaging ships for some materials back is a good one, you know the other crafting professions would instantly be in an uproar if they didn't give that feature to all crafts.
I have little doubt that we are gonna start seeing some cheap "used" ship chassis on Kauri bazaar pretty soon. Guess we'll just go with the flow for now. But I am pretty sure I am not going to be buying back chassis for the time being.

This doesn't sound good at all. I wouldn't want to have my name associated with a used, underquality ship.

heh funny, i started doing this about a week ago. I would get tells from people asking if I had "cheap" chasis for sale, so i started asking them if they wanted to be on a list if/when i got some reduced or used starships. They all said yes. Right now I consider it a community service as i sell them on the vendor with minimal markup. I have the buyback details and what acceptable buyback prices are on the vendor. I advertise it as a way to get poor newbies into space. At the very least it will bring back return customers as they know they can trade in their already cheap chasis torwards the purchase of their next upgrade.
<shrug> don't see how its bad for buisness.

I attempted this with a friend of mine who was tight on cash, the person who bought the re-deeded ship could not generate it, no matter what he tried. Unless that aspect gets fixed, this will simply lead to you losing out on money and possibly reputation as a shipwright.
I had this problem about a week ago. Guy sent me a tell saying that he couldnt generate the deed he bought from me the night before. I flew to him and tried generating myself, nothing happend so i exchanged it with a new deed. The very next day i saw something in the patch notes about ships not generating. Lo and behold the ship in my inventory generatedafter the patch.

I buy back used ships, IF, a couple of things..
1) the mass is equal to what I craft on that ship.
2) The hitpoints of the chassis are within 200 of what I craft brand new.
I also pay what I sell the ship for, such as, I sell a dunelizard blueprint for 45k. I buy a dunelizard DEED back for 45k.
I then sell the deed for my normal blueprint cost + chassis broker mark up.
Turns into a profit, but it's rare when someone offers a ship to me that fits my buy back requirements.

On a slightly different tack
When our Guild SW was grinding master pretty well the whole guild put harvies here there and everywhere to get the rescources to all the grind.
As a thankyou the first thing that was done was a number (3 or 4) of each type of ship was made by him for 'guild use'
Basically we collected the deed from a bag in the guild house and generated the ship, equipped it and used it until it wasnt needed any more then it was redeeded and placed back in the bag and swapped for the next level ship.
I know a lot of guilds are not as tightly knit as ours but this solution worked well for us as it means we dont have to spend lots of money on chassis that we will be using for a very short period.

Should I buy back the ship, eliminating my initial profit in an attempt to make a profit on it again? If you want to do this, don't do it now. Ship mass is about to be increased, so I'm not even crafting new chassis except by special order.

Talk about 'buyer beware'... is the average buyer astute enough to notice the figures are degraded? Can you even see the numbers on the deed, or are they like swoops were it basically says, "It's a Swoop"?
_If_ were to take it back as a trade in, I would give maybe 20-25% off on the next purchase and would encourage the customer to sell it themselves to someone they know instead.
Maybe I'm missing something there, but the last time I looked, it is not possible to determine the decay on chassis and components.
