Set things up so YOU determine what you read.

It really seems like you are worried about how people are rating your posts... Maybe you should think about why you keep getting one stared instead of peoples preferences.

Not at all - I don't care about getting 1-starred. If you look at my rating I've obvioulsy gotten more 5's than 1s.

This issue isn't that morons 1star anyone they don't agree with. The issue is that the forum defaults "hide" stuff that falls below a threashold. What this means is that the morons can take an idea tossed out by someone who they dislike and remove it from the discourse. If the defaults were set at "1 star" then I wouldn't bother with a post like this. I think that people deserve to see every idea on the table and make their own choices as to the validity of the idea.

Are you trying to say you think someone is going around and purposely hiding your posts? Like they do not like you, or you made them mad? Because that would be the only way what you are trying to do herehas any weight. It then becomes an issue you should take up with an admin.

Otherwise, people have every right to one star you for not agreeing with, or not liking what you are saying. Having everyone turning off the rating system just because you dont like being one starred is dumb.

Not to mention this is totally off topic for the "Shipwright" forum.

loonatik, I'll say again - I don't care what people rate my posts at. My *issue* is that we have morons in here who are going around 1-staring LOTS of people, based on if they *like* the person, or if they *agree* with them, or if they think that the subject is inappropriate. As has been said, some of them are 1-starring *guides*, which is pretty stupid.

But we can't do anything about what the morons do. It's ok. I don't ever expect to reach them - they typically don't listen to anything they don't want to.

My advice to people - and I believe that it *IS* relevant to the shipwrights forum because we have a lot of new information to get discover and get out - is to simply fix their forum defaults so they can decide for themselves what they want to read or not.

By NOT making this change in your forum settings, you are allowing other arbitrary people to impact what you are able to read. That's it. If that's ok with you, then don't change your settings.

First of all, if someone wants to one star your post, for WHATEVER reason, they have every right to do so. Calling them morons is just counter productive. There is nothing you can say to change this. The only way it would be improper is if someone was doing it on purpose to hide your posts. Thats it.

Secondly, if your post is getting one starred enough to be hidden. Chances are, it shouldnt be listed anyway.

Lastly, all you are talking about is it showing up in the table of contents. Its not like the post is hidden when you go into the shipwright forum. Its still there, and it has one star. If your post is WORTH reading, it will not have one star.

So, IMO, all of your effort here to get people to turn off the rating system totally is just not worth it. I would prefer to see the rating. If someone has 5 stars, I know its something I should read. Why you would not want to see that is beyond me.

You aren't reading what I'm saying - obviously I haven't found a way to state it clearly.

I am NOT suggesting that people change their rating habits, for any reason whatsoever. They will use the stars however they want to.

I am NOT suggesting that people *turn off* the ratings. As you say, it can be interesting information to know if a particular post has 1 stars or 5 stars.

I am pointing to two facts:

1. The forum default is to *hide* posts that have 1 stars.

2. People use the 1-stars for *LOTS* of reasons. Some of those people might reflect your particular values, and therefore their 1-star matches what you would give the post. However, it is also quite possible that the person handing out a 1-star is NOT sharing your values, and therefore you might NOT agree with their 1-star assessment.

Given those two facts (having absolutely NOTHING to do with "me" or my rating or how people rate my posts), and given the comment earlier here in this thread by the author of one of the best guides yet to come out of the shipwright community, about people 1-starring guides, what I'm suggesting is that people simply set their board preferences such that they can *SEE* everything (posts AND ratings) and make their own decisions on the value of the material to them.

Thanks, Zen. I didn't realize they were hiding 1 star posts by default, but I don't understand the instructions in your signature.

Setting the Rating Style to None removes my ability to rate posts. Setting the Rating Quality Filter to 1 would seem to be what you want to do to show all posts regardless of rating. Maybe they changed these options around recently.

Thanks Laeir - I looked at the options again and fixed my sig quote to give the correct directions. It leaves the rating system ON but sets the threashold to "1" so you will SEE everything.

If all you were doing was trying to inform people who use the table of contents as a means to find posts, then I wouldnt be here saying anything at all. Maybe that is your goal here. However, you are saying more than just that. You are belittling people who one-star if they do not like or agree with something somenone has said. They have every right to do so. If your post is worth reading, there will be more 5 stars than 1 stars.

Originally (which you have now recently changed) you were telling people to set their rating style to NONE. Which DOES turn off the rating system. That is the only reason for my comments above.
