The asteroid bits is used in the BARC speeder recovery from being shot to pieces and junked kit also.

pheylan, in response to your question, you can use the asteriod resources without having rotw...just can't mine without it
my sw account doesnt' have the expansion yet, but has been churning out mining gear like mad, as well as a fair number of the new winglet kits (those make fairly nice imperial house/POB ship decor...awfully nice of the devs to shape 'em like the imperial symbol)

I have been having success selling the roid resorces via the bazaar.
To me it seems to be a bit silly to buy the mineing equipment or any of the SW made stuff outright. If you do the quests that give you 2 mineing lasers,2 fightercargo holds, and the tractor beem, you will have what it takes to mine the resorces needed to get the better stuff made. I have yet to encounter a SW that will take my money in exchange for doing the combines for me *boggle*. What they will take as a tip is resorces (I allways tip for services rendered)
