I was reading a SW novel earlier, and an idea hit me... so I thought this idea could float by ya'll shipwrights..
Most crafters have crafter stations, to include shipwright, Architechs have the big house factories, artisans have clothing fatories... and because these are planetary goods, they are placed on ground... what if ya'll Shipwrights could have Starship Factories that you can place in space... you'd be able to keep the waypoint to it, travel to it like a station, dock with it, and actually walk on it the same way ya would the parked yacht to work it, fill hoppers, and actually build your starships.
This would not give you any tactical advantages, all it would do is add some Space feel to being a shipwright? Add more content for your profession.
Just a thought.
*edited cuz I caint seem to spell too good when F'ed up drunk (BTW, HAppy New YEAR!!!!!!)

Intersting idea, but what about SW's who do not choose to become pilots (and there are quite a few out there)?

It wouldn't matter if you chose not to become a pilot.
All you would need is base level pilot skills.
Maybe at novice SW, you could gain a trader pilot license.
Nice idea but I can't see it being implemeted

Interesting idea, but I doubt it would ever be implemented. I'd like to see the idea expanded, though. Not just orbital workshops for shipwrights, but entire orbital structures for homes, asteroid harvesting, etc. Alas, it will probably never see the light of day.

Maybe they will be forced to do this.
I don't know how long the novelty of NPC combat in space will last without the promise of loot, events or missions.
Maybe the 'home in space' is the way to go.
Nice ideas.

In my opinion, a SW isn't worth his salt if he isn't a pilot as well. How can a SW truly understand the nuances of the pilot's needs without jumping in a ship and experiencing the battle?

"forced to do this"? "forced" is an interesting word. I don't think so. A great many veterns have left the game because combat and the GCW are fundamentally flawed. Yes, SOE is fixing these aspects of the game. However, they very well fell into the schedule that they dictated, and I often wonder whether SOE gave a damn if all that left did because these aspects of the game were broken for so long. Thus, if you expect the space aspect of the game to change dramatically anytime soon, I think you better brace yourself for a long wait.

Could be intresting but can see it being a bit of a cluttered mess to do. Can see it now around corilla and tat having the planet ringed with stations/factories. Also sure the whole lot issue would be a problem for it. Though the idea of a few limited 'shipyards' in space could be intresting. Might limited it to MSW and have a limit of one per MSW. Allow it to be a repair and refuel station. Know stock it with maintance and power and if you stock it with repair kits players can swing by and get repairs for a price and maybe even get rearmed. Ah the posibilities are endless sadly the code is limiting. But who knows might bea cool addition down the road. Who knows maybe even have a faction perk that can be a repair/refule station that can be put out in deep space like faction bases. As said the posibilities...

/chasses Jag around the shipwright forums
but is a case for not having a space based crafting system for SW IMHO

You know, I happen to like having the virtually lag-free environment in space. I use my Yacht as an "orbiting crafting station" which I RP up a bit to my clients who generally enjoy such a little tale, I've had quite a few people remark on the creativity of it, especially when I take them up with me...have a waiting room and everything :-p But, to start putting structures and such with more people going to them and more traffic and more mobs and more LAG...NO! SOE made space good and wholesome and pure, PLEASE keep it that way!

Keeping clutter down might be nice but your post also gave me an intresting idea as well. Have a ship/factory that you can take up and use to run off your factory runs that peopel are wanting. Though will be like the vet ship and take lots and only runs when you are there in it so you want a factory take the ship up in oribut and run off the stuff you want. Maybe have it be your own repair bardge where you can fly around and actualy offer repair services in space to people. Could be intresting middle ground and a bit of fun.
