Thread: An Idea for a new Ranger Skill...Pacify

I've decided not to go the route of the Ranger, even though that's my usual preference, mainly because nothing in the skill tree seems very "Rangery." Therefore, I thought I'd try and provoke some discussion on a possible addition to the class.


I call it "Pacify." Simply put, Pacify would allow a Ranger a one shot chance to convince an attacking creature to back off. When the Pacify command is used, several things should happen to prevent exploiting.



  1. The Player and Creature should both immediately exit combat.

  2. The Creature should automatically heal itself.

  3. A timer should start which, until it depletes, prevents both the player and creature from attacking each other.

  4. The Pacify skill should have a re-use timer on it that is extremely long.

Some additional junk they could do to make rangers cooler include:


-Creature Tracking


-Call of the Wild (allows Ranger to attempt to enlist the aid of critters within a certain range, of a certain faction, to help the Ranger with his/her current target).


-Rangers should be able to nurture certain lairs, providing food in an effort to get the lair to grow. This could be the equivalent of stocking game in a preserve in the real world. Would make for some fun hunting opportunities.


-Rangers should be able to set traps that actually lure baby creatures of a type chosen by the ranger. The traps should be able to be set and forgotten. The trap should have a variable chance of catching a baby version of the specified creature. The Ranger is then e-mailed that the trap is successfull. At that point, the Ranger has so much time before the baby escapes to retrieve it. Once a baby is retrieved, it can be sold to Creature Handlers. Of course, traps can only catch creatures that are native to the planet it is set on. Also, traps should have a decay rate.

Bah! I didn't mean to put this on this forum. Too many windows open. This thread should be on the Ranger forum. Well, just pretend it says Scout instead of Ranger.

I get so much email already. Now I get email from my traps? bah!


The caveat is that if you allow scouts to lay traps the wilderness outside the cities will be literally minefields waiting for disaster... hehe. You'd probably need a modifier to account for the chance that an unwitting PC trips the trap instead...


Good thoughts, anyways. I like your ideas. Scouting's been quite fun for me and I hope that it continues to grow as a profession.
