Thread: What can Scouts do that others can't?
Other people can traverse terrain, scouts just do it a little faster.
Other people can harvest, we just do it a little better.
Other people can buy and use camps and traps just like scouts (yes?).
Maskscent is worthless since the same result can be achieved by walking around a mob. Everyone can do that.
Forage? Is that it? We can dig up bait but no one else can?
Building traps and camps? Do they sell for much?
I'm not getting down on the class, it just suddenly occurs to me that everyone else can pretty much do what we do, we just do it a little better. And the items we make don't really seel for all that much.
What is unique about scouts?
"Everybody" has scouting since it leads to two of the most popular professions in the game. Creature Handlers and Bounty Hunters. Not to mention Squad Leaders and Bio-Engineers are also scouts, and of course Rangers. So there is not much uniqueness since at least 3/4 of the population has some level of scouting.

Jmatt,
"Other people can traverse terrain, scouts just do it a little faster."
No. A LOT faster. I can almost never be the point man in a group because no one can keep up with me. This is a pretty good skill to have.
"Other people can harvest, we just do it a little better."
No. This is a Scout only skill. You cannot harvest corpses unless you have Scout skill. You can still loot, but not harvest.
"Other people can buy and use camps and traps just like scouts (yes?)."
No. Only other Scouts can buy and use your traps. No one else has the ability to do so.
"Maskscent is worthless since the same result can be achieved by walking around a mob. Everyone can do that."
You need to get off whichever starter planet you are on and visit Lok, Endor, Dantooine or Dathomir. There are places where you CAN'T get 64 meters on two sides to go in the direction you want to go. Having maskscent helps do that. Also the camo bonus you get also lets you get closer to mobs without them agroing on you. I know this because my guildies are constantly bitching that I get too close to red's when I'm squad leading them on Endor - I don't even think about it anymore because I know I can get around most stuff without getting stomped.
"Forage? Is that it? We can dig up bait but no one else can?"
Forage is an under utilized skill. You get some pretty good bonuses off the food you dig up - check the stats up. Some of them are as good as low level spice, and you don't need to deal with a smuggler to get it. The devs are working on making forgage more usable as we speak.
"Building traps and camps? Do they sell for much?"
No - because every Scout can make them. So only the laziest of the lazy Scouts will waste their money buying your traps and camps. What you CAN sell are the hides and bones that you harvest. They have multiple uses across many different skillsets that ensure that they are always in demand.
"I'm not getting down on the class, it just suddenly occurs to me that everyone else can pretty much do what we do, we just do it a little better. And the items we make don't really seel for all that much."
The reason you have this perception is that because the skills that Scouting gives you are so widely recognized as useful and important, nearly EVERYONE picks up novice scouting. No other class, in my opinion, has such basic attractiveness to all of the other classes as Scouting does.
And we're only going to get better as the Devs continue to adapt and expand on our role and our abilities.

That must be it, then, because it seems to me that everyone can do the things we do. Doctors probably feel the same way about scouts using stimpacks. ![]()
By the way, you are an excellent advocate for the profession. I hope they allow you to continue to go to bat for us after your month is up.
Jmatt,
Ahh..stimpacks. I feel their pain.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm glad you approve of the job I'm doing so far, and I hope everyone else shares the sentiment - even if I can't always bring good news or a lot of it. ![]()
