Thread: Trap = automatic detection?

I'm slowly climbing up the scout tree, with just Hunting IV and Trapping IV left to go. I'm very much liking the changes to mask scent - no more breaking by yellows! (I miss the exp gain from reds a little, but much prefer it not being broken to gaining small amounts of exp.)

I've noticed that if I've enabled mask scent and lie prone I can fire on pretty much any creature for days on end and not have them notice me. That is, unless I throw a trap. Once the trap leaves my hand - whether it scores a hit or not - the creature instantly locks in on my position and starts running for me.

This seems really odd to me. I can take 10+ shots and not be spotted but I'm instantly noticed if I throw a trap? Is this as designed or a (minor) bug?

PS - Thanks for the great guides and awesome atmosophere here. This board is by far the most friendly of any I've seen here on the official forums.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been working on my Trapping, trying to get Master Scout. I've just green-filled Trapping III. Battle efficiency-wise, I'm much better off without using a trap. I can go prone and usually kill whites and blues without taking a scratch. If I throw a trap into the mix, I end up tanking on anything over a low blue. The trap might as well be a big neon sign that says "Hey, She's Over There". Anyone who's had a dog knows that animals aren't the best at following arcing objects. So why does my lobbing a trap give away my postition pretty much every single time? The only design rationale I can see is that maybe they want training Trap to involve a combat compromise so it's not so easy to level up.

Want to be let in on a little secret???

If you are using a carbine, use Action Shot 2 to knock them down, then through the trap. The trap will hit before the creature gets up, thus awarding you trapping XP before the mob gets to you.

Skull,

There's also the issue of multiple creatures aggroing after you hit one of 'em. The one you targeted will wander around like a drunk in search of a beer for five minutes, but his sober buddies are on you like white on rice. So you've got high-tail it outta there like a bat outta hell. This is a problem that we're hoping the devs take care faster than a speeding bullet.

Ok. Ran outta cliches.

Make sure you aren't doing an area attack. The way I used to tackle a lair, before I got all buff was I would Charge Shot the lair once, hit peace, see if any mobs rolled out, if not charge Shot the lair again. Usually on the 2nd shot, a few mobs rolled out and I either killed them or went running around like a little schoolgirl.
