Is it possible to use a camping kit you don't have the schematic to build and, if so, would you get the same bonuses for that kit you would normally?

Yes.

Not sure whether developers intended this, but I (prior to current patch) was able to set up improved camp with only schematics for multiperson camp.

It's hit or miss. The improved camp seems to be the only one that you can do what Frogfather says. If you are only able to use Basic, you can't us the other two. And if you can only use up to Improved, you still can't use any of the Ranger camps.

This is probably a bug, but its not large enough to have caught anyone's attention yet. Shhhh.

Okay. I was kind of hoping I'd be able to buy a high tech base camp from a ranger and set it up and get more survival xp that way. Guess I should know better...
