Thread: More Fun With Scouting

I have discovered something that works for me and thought I'd share. Lots of people complain about survival xp and the slowness of it. I agree, its slow. But the reason I am having fun is I quit treating scouting as a "chore" to grind through on my way to Bounty Hunter.

After reading these forums I started playing my character as an actual scout. I treat it as my primary profession. I'm not much of a roleplayer or anything, but roleplaying a scout has turned out to be lots of fun.

I'll soon be a master scout, probably this weekend. I'm finding that I enjoy it. Even when I become a bounty hunter, I'll be leaving the Master Scout title on my avatar (because would you "really" advertise that you are a hired killer, I mean, COME ON)

Did you know you can use /forage to find food? Do you realize how useful this is? You can fish, forage, camp, trap, maskscent, run up mountains! It "seems" like small stuff, but man, I've never had all these skills in one profession in a game before.

Its hard sometimes, but just forget about the grind and see Scouting for the wonderful profession it is. You will find that stopping to smell the roses instead of being so goal oriented on your way to bounty hunter (or whatever) that you will have fun and be proud to be known as a Scout.

Works for me anyway. No, I don't want a cookie. Just trying to add a new perspective to perceptions.

Well said, Mosh, I just wish more people would see it this way, especially the of people complaining about survival XP, i mean, come on, you dont even need to do anything to gain XP.

It the small things that count,

When it rains, set up camp, relax, look around you, perhaps camp by a river or swamp if its more to your taste. The nice people at SOE put a lot of work into making the landscape as pretty as it is, give them some credit, sit back, chill, and watch the clouds go by.

Mosh,

You should get a cookie anyway.

I'm glad to see that others have the same enthusiasm I have for this butt-kicking profession.

Let us all know when you make Master!

Will do. I'm excited. Yesterday we ran to the top of the highest mountain I have seen in game. Its somewhere on Dathomir (where you spend 99% of your time running from things because you can't kill them, but they can easily kill you). We got there are were awestruck. The short bit of daylight on that planet had just come on and you could see this incredible landscape.

I made a camp and we sat there, doing our "ooh" "ah's".

Later I set up at another spot that was a green pasture on top of a smaller mountain. I surveyed a bit and scrolled the camera out to get a wide view. I was again awestruck with the graphics. If truly "felt" like camping.

I even had some hunters come along and camp and let me heal them (also a medic) and got great survival xp. I found that to be more fun that shooting pirates or nightsisters, or just about anything else in game.

Its almost enough to make me want to be a Ranger.

I love to /forage. Maybe some day I can open a bait shop! At least its safer than peddling spice...

I like that the Scout is a middle-ground class that balances combat and non-combat gameplay elements. I'm not dependent on tips to make a living, but neither am I expected to be teh Uber gunslinger.

Does anyone know if chefs can use the food we forage?

I hit Master Scout a couple of weeks ago. I didn't find it to be a chore at all. And I didn't XP grind for anything.

Thanks for this post . I have come to SWG from 2 level grinding games and am so enjoying my Scout and the relaxing road I am taking towards mastering my profession. Yesterday, after meeting a stranger out in the field, I invitedhim to stop and heal up and rest my camp. We sat enjoying the evening stars, getting to know each other . When it was time to head to town and log, I disbanded my camp and ouila.....nice experience ....from just sitting and chatting with a new friend ! Logging off with a smile on my face instead of drained from 4 hours of grinding for experience, I realized for ME, THIS is the way I want to play my game

A very happy Scout who does stop and smell the roses.....alot

It wasn't so much that Survial Experince was a grind, but more that it's usually the last experince you get.. It seems a little unbalanced. I can get Scout experince a couple different ways.. and I get trapping experince everytime I fight, but naturally survial experince comes in pretty slow. Usually I just make a camp long enough to heal up and pull a creature out of my datapad.. and I get a whopping 60 points of experince..

I too play my scout for the fun of it, but when you end up with all your other skills maxed out and waiting on survial experince to go to the next level (what ever this may be for you), it's a sign that somthing about the survial experince is out of whack.

The other issue with it, is unlike other skills even those that people grind.. your still playing the game.. with survial experince.. you just sitting there. (well most of the time) I usually like to sample or something.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a Survial experince sucks post.. I reached Survival IV last night.. so it's possible. And as a scout one thing I really look forward to is seeing my new camp sight.. and I was really impressed with the level IV camp site.. All those chairs and the big round area around the fire.. and how bout those new dome tents.. so much easier to setup.

I do wish that the campsites gave us a little bit more functionality.. and that they just didn't dissapear.. a campsite is to a scout what a home is to an artisian.. so let me keep it up and live there till I decide it's time to move on.. Imagine creating a scouting outpost , where you could store your stuff , while out and about.

I reached Master Scout last night. That has been my goal since creating the character.

Now I find I really don't have much desire to go one way or the other to a new profession.

I think I'll just toy around with a bunch and see what happens.
