Thread: A day in the life or, how I avoided grinding the last 12k of Scout XP I needed...
So I decide to leave Nocrau Island early in the morning and go get myself a shiny new weapon. Reldan (a much heralded weaponsmith on Bloodfin) has been out as of late so I figured I'd head over to SF City.
I still needed close to 12k worth of scout XP in order to close the gap I needed to get my Master Scout title...so I figured I'd walk to SF City (about 3k-4k meters) rather then taking the shuttle and see what I could kill along the way.
Let me tell you, that walk proved to be one of the most enjoyable in-game moments I have had so far. Every 10 minutes or so I would happen across some remote lair that was imposing on the countryside or some dastardly band of thugs that needed to be taught a lesson. I likewise came across no less then 4-5 remote settlements while traversing the land NW of Coronet (much to my surprise I found an entertainer on duty in this remote location).
Before I realized it, not only had I gotten my much needed scout XP, but had also gotten enough trapping xp to finish out my trapping skills and accrued enough xp in pistol to qualify for epistler training!
The walk itself took me about 3hrs of real-time. I found myself wandering all over the hills and mountains to see what was around or to chase down the occasional herd. I took time to produce enough traps and stim-packs to keep me happy for the next month (or until I have another major hunting expedition
) and even ran into a couple other players out just doing their thing.
All in all, it was a great break from the 'need' to hunt/trap. I got to enjoy my scout for what he is and just explore the wilds. If I was ever in doubt as to whether the scout role was right for me, it was forgotten that morning when I headed out for a short walk just to get a shiny new weapon.
That is a great story! I have to say, wandering is my favorite profession. I've overloaded my PC with the number of screenshots I've taken in remote locations. Really, really wonderful graphics. The best thing about wandering is that you get to experiment with different scouting strategies, ie: what combos of traps and shots you like to take down big creatures, small creatures, etc. I was amazed - after a day of wandering Dathomir, hunting spiders (with the help of a master ranger - who kindly let me harvest - and a creature handler), and running away from witches, I had made 40k scouting xp without even realizing. And together we made over 90 thousand credits. Wow. So getting out and exploring other, harder, planets -not just staying at home and killing peons -is definitely worth it. Definitely clone though. Those witches are not friendly. *grin*

This is the true way of getting your Scouting and Ranger Skills. I have walked all over Naboo, and seen many a good sites. The down side is, that few, if anyone, will be willing to keep you company. Even on a short walk, very few people care to "wander."
When you do these walks, you realy explore. Though now, that I have Master Ranger, I don't do them myself anymore. (That and the current maskscent annoances)

Uhr,
Thanks for posting this - every once and a while it goods to forget about the FP, the XP, the AXP and all of the other acronyms and just go for a wander and have a good time seeing the sights.
I try to do this at least once a week, so I don't forget my roots. ![]()

Greetings Ivy, good to see you brave the forums ![]()
I do think a lot of folks get in a rush to get Master "Whatever" (there are times I just couldn't wait to get that one last box myself) and it's unfortunate that more people don't take the time to go out and explore the lands.
Right now, I love that it might take me an hour to walk to that remote mountian, and I hate to think of 100 'l337 |)00|)5' all running around those same remote areas once vehicles come out simpl,y because it will be easier to do so. It's nice to wander out there and know that you can take a breath without listening to 1000 /shouts for training, selling wares, bitching etc. Hopefully the wild-lands won't be too overcrowded with the coming of mounts and vehicles.
Like you, I too enjoy sitting in the cantina's resting telling my tales of exploration, and am always surprised by the responsesof 'I've never been outside Bestine' or 'Isn't that a long way to walk' or 'I didn't realize those creatures even lived on this planet'. Seems like a lot of folks in this game, much like real life, never venture outside of their 'home' and miss all the things there are to see out there. That's all right by me though, makes my roads less packed ![]()
I don't think I have ever posted here befor but I wanted to put in my few cents worth (besides you go to start posting with something). I have met a lot of people who were very concerned with making Master something, I think that's great we need people like that to help the economy. Me I'm a Scout and I'm still working on level four in all my novice skills and I have been playing this game since it went retail. I play when I can and when I do it is the most enjoyable time I have had playing a game in a long time (I still miss my ole C-64). Anyway I really enjoy wandering around just looking at the sceneryand sometime when I am way up in the mountains of Naboo I think wow I am probably the first player to see this place, to me the enjoyment of exploring is more satisfying than the victory of the kill. I spend days on end out "looking around" and when i do make it back to a town i am usually loaded down with 500 battle fatigue and great stories of how I got it. I enjoy the interaction with the new players who just need a hand like I did in the beginning and the education I get from the older players (masters and those who play more often than I can). I guess what I wanted to say was I am having a great time with it. Thanks to all of you who have helped me out in game and on these forums I have truly learned a lot. I guess that's it...

Hi Uhrdeth:
Your story inspired me to venture out in Talus. I enjoy wandering (as I am on the Wanderhome server, :smileyhappy
but I have been recently just doing missions and checking my harvesters. I am currently running west from Dearic, to find some new sights, thanks for the word

I've tried to make myself do this since day of release and so far it has gotten me a long way.
What I do it grab a shuttle to a random town and just start walking. Don't worry about going too far, just keep walking. You'll be amazed how much more fun you'll have this way. It sucks for grouping but if you're a solo player it's the ideal way to get your exploring kicks.
Look at your ctrl+V map and look for an interestingpiece of land and just head that way. There's only 1 person in control of the grind and that's you.
Glad to see I am not alone in my thoughts on avoiding the grind.
Last night I decided to go visit what appeared to be a large mountain region on Corellia. 2hrs later I had finally made it there after wandering through wood and glen. During my journey, I happened to hear 'easy now....don't bite....that's a girl....easy...easy...', my interests being perked (after all, maybe I came across a nice Twi'lek hottie and her female companion
) I headed over a ridge to see a creature handler doing his utmost to tame one of the free-rangefauna. I was amazed to see that even in such a remote local, someone was actually 'rping' their taming (even if it might have only been a macro)...I stopped and we swapped stories about the local flora and fauna, traded some goods and spent a brief bit hunting together before our paths parted.
At the end of my evening, I noticed I had gained some 5k trapping, some 10k scout and another 2k-3k of survival xp (once I finally earn that last 20 AXP I can put that XP to use
).
Once again, I had a good time playing...no worries about xp, no group complaining about a btter xp spot elsewhere, just a plain relaxing time. The game gets better the less I 'play it' and the more I just 'do my thing'.
Heh. Actually, that's not a macro -- that's what happens when you try to tame a creature. The application does it for you. I especially like the "Good er... boy?"
Before I got my new computer this week (I get a new machine every three years when I encounter a game that my old machine can't handle... yes, I am a walking computer-gaming-nerd-cliche), I HATED taking the shuttle anywhere because it would take five minutes for everything to render, assuming I didn't get booted! Because this was so frustrating, I just learned to walk from one city to the next. It helps me see the sites of a planet. I spaceported into Narmle on Rori, walked to the Rebel Military Base, then walked up to Restuss where I left the planet. Lovely and fun!
Don't guess I had actually witnessed a taming session (sounds like something you should see at a bondage club) run its course then. You'd think with all the CH's running around, I woulda seen that before
