Well, I started the game on release. I chose scout since I know that there's no vehicles yet, and that trekking around the world would be a big thing for me (I never was the type of person who liked to stay in one spot for long).

As I began to play, however, I was having some problems. I chose Rifles as the weapon I'd use, and began combat. The first thing I noticed is that I'm utterly horrible at combat. If I go prone a ways away from my target, I can (If I am very, very lucky) get two full charge rifle shots off before the mob aggroes and attacks me. The second it aggroes and attacks, I stand up, and get hit for 140 four times for every shot I can get off (Using Point Blank to snap off a 93 point shot). I figured that life would get better as I got better with my rifle, however I am now at EXPERT rifle level (The third one in the tree) and am still getting destroyed bythe same enemies who'd hit for 140 when I was unskilled.

Did I make a really poor starting choice choosing rifle over melee weapons?

Is there any way to be able to fight safely against creatures? I seem to do pretty well against humanoid NPC's but since I can't harvest from them, it makes fighting them almost useless.

Is there any other way at all of earning scouting EXP other than harvesting? Trying to work up the 5000 needed for Mask Scent seems really, really dull when I only get 30-60 per harvesting attempt.

well, go with carbine if your going to solo, your choosing a weopon thats more of a support at lower levels

and you get more experiance when u skin a higher level animal, like a bantha

good luck on that though

Until you can get some traps that slow or stop creatures (no such luck on NPCs), you might want a pistol as well. Weapons have a modifier to the damage done to you in melee. Pistol is *1.1, Carbine *2.5, and Rifle is *3.5 (or thereabouts).

Switch to the pistol once your target closes. The other alternative is to find a group and hang out in the back.
