I have SWG but I am waiting for a pc upgrade before i start. I've been reading these forums and making notes on useful tips, but I was wondering if someone could answer this for me:
I am going to be starting as a scout and take some delivery missions for credits then i am going to train to make myself a better hunter. So my question is would it be more worthwhile to get marksman for my rifle/pistol skills or get brawler for when the animal comes up close. Or would it be wise to get both of these?

i am using a scout/marksman, and it has been working for me quite well. i normally group up with some other people however, and there is usually a brawler in the group so i dont do the close up stuff. the novice marksman skill does give a point blank shot special attack that i use every now and then to take out the guys that come close.

I chose Pistols because I thought I would always be up close on most of my battles.

Most creatures are melee combatants. This is important to know, because marksmen take damage increases to melee damage. The numbers are 1.2, 1.5, 2.0 damage multipliers for pistol, carbine and rifle, respectively. I suggest that if you are wanting to do marksman, you take up pistol, to reduce the amount of damage increase. Either that, or you'll need to do weapon switches mid-combat or take up marksman and brawler.
Personally, I love my scout/brawler and have had no problems with her. The scout profession compliments brawling quite nicely. One, you can make traps with a range of 50 meters to pull enemies to you, while giving status ailments. Two, you can get terrain negotiation and camoflage that lets you sneak up to them and get away when in trouble. Three, brawlers get bonuses to melee toughness, which makes it easier for your scout to survive creatures.
One thing to note though: your character will need to have the large health/action pools for combat, regardless if you choose marksman or brawler. When starting your character as a scout, you get better starting equipment, but your stats are geared more even than for combat. Take some time to look at the stats for a brawler or marksman (which ever you chose) and tailor your stats in that direction. Also note that changing stats in the newbie tutorial is instantaneous; in the real game, it takes time. Playing a combat role with the starting stats of a scout will be rough.

I was thinking i would get scout/markman with camo and scent mask, that way i can get some good shot before they find me. I'm also considering haveing some medic skills so i can a little more self sufficient in the wilderness
