Alright, I have recently added scouting and marksman to my skill to improve my abilities as an artisan and I simply don't understand how to set up camps.

I have walked about 2k from the city and tried to find relatively flat land. However when I try to set up camp it says it is a no building zone. About how much space of flat land do you need? an acre? 2?

can you be near trees?

I'm currently only using the basic camp.

To Devs, it might be nice to have some sort of tool to look at the map and show areas appropriate for camping.

I would like it so if it says "can't set up camp" it would set a way point to the nearest campable area.

Generally speaking once you leave a city, "You have left %CityName" message, go roughly another 500 or so meters out, perhaps a bit more. Try and build a camp. Nine out of Ten times it should work without a problem. When it doesn't work you are probably too close to a house, or for some reason unknown to us, it's a no build zone. The no build zone actually spreads out from the city at a decent distance, but if you are honestly 2,000 meters away from a city you should be able to build a camp.

Terrain types of the land shouldn't matter, I've built them on the cliffs outside of Theed.

you do not need flat space, I build camps on mountain slopes a number of cities have staggeringly absurd no build zones around. You just need to get past the no build zone and you are fine. LOK is particuarly bad around NYM's fort (which you would think would have a tiny no build zone given how rough and uncivilized it is) yah have to go 2k away sometimes to find a build zone.

I should add you can not build next to buildings, but you can build next to harvesters... but be careful your camp control may get stuckinsde the harvester.

Actually the distance from towns vary quite a bit because of local terrain. And unfortunately the scout does not have a way to determine where a camp can be made. I use the location of harvesters and mines as a good telling point. Since most artisans try to find the highest concentration of good quality minerals at the closest point to town, these are good indicators to where a camp can be made. I have never failed to make a camp near a harvestor (sometimes having to move around a little to find the "borderline".

Camping is one of the most boring skills to raise, because it requires you to sit in one place and generally scouts tend to be loners (so no friends to chat with while sitting in camp). If you do have an adventuring party kudos to you. Try to convince them to fight from within a camp as you can gain exp while there.

You can build just about anywhere, in fact the terrain changes to suit your needs (kind of a cool graphical thing).

the non-build zones or not just around cities, you can leave a city to the south and find a build zone at 2k from the cities but go west and not find one for 20k. the best bet is to look for an harvester and camp near it.

There is the slim posibility you may be bugged as well, which happened to me in Beta sometimes, unless they've squashed that one. Otherwise, everything these fine folks have said is true. You have to go to the "wilderness" to easily get wilderness survival XP. And if your controls do get stuck inside a harvester, never fear, if you leave the camp for a few minutes, it'll disband itself.
