Thread: Try changing your maskscent tactics
I'm not going to defend the way that Sony changed maskscent. I'm also not going to address the problems that CH/BEs still have.
However, I found that you CAN get reasonable XP gain in maskscent if you change your tactics a little bit.
1) Stay off of the tough planets. The critters and Lok, Yavin etc.. will break your scent too often as they're too high level.
2) Find a type of mob that you have pretty good success against.
3) Walk around until you find 2 packs of these mobs fairly close together.
4) Target 1 mob and creep in until you're at 64 meters. (Prone if you want to be really safe). Back off as soon as you get XP or get your scent broken. If you got XP, maneuver around until you have another mob at 64 meters. Repeat until you get XP from as many mobs as you can. Go to the second camp and continue.
I was able to gain 4000 XP an hour doing this on Desert Squills last night and I only have Exploration 3. They only broke my scent about once per pack. As soon as I tried the same thing on a pack of dragonets, they broke my scent a lot. So the choice of monster is really important now. Also, if you only have 1 mob in range at a time, your chances of getting detected are much lower.

Good advice...
Combine this with the advice in my thread "How to get around the Mask Scent Nerf" and I think we have a good solution
I just made Expl IV and still trip mobs off to my presence from time to time.. I think the biggest culpret is yellow mobs around at the time. Since the "nerf", I liked to get Kreetle or the Big Frog guys (cant recall their names....The big fat guys. destroy missions. I liked to creep in with mask scent from about 65 m, crawl to within 50...usually the nearer mobs either detect you or give you your scout XP. After plinking the first few with headshots....Remask if needed and go in closer. After all the baddies are cleared...You can camp the lair...when new ones respawn...You have a pretty good chance of getting the XP if 1) you are masked and 2) there are no yellow cons around. Plinking Kreetles from afar was how I finished my Exploring XP grind. You can get a good 10-sometimes 15 kreetles in a lair. Kill em all, kill the lair, then go in harvesting like a mad man. Hope this helps...

so, i've masked scent and crawled to 60m from a tatooine Mynock...its a light blue aggro con. i've been sitting here for a minute without any xp gain.
am i doing something wrong?
The problem now, is the fail rate of MS (maskscent). If MS fails we are screwed.
BUT we CAN turn it on and off as quickly and as often as WE want to, don't forget.
So we just have to make sure when approaching a non aggressive creature (yellow triangle) that, WE have to shut it off.
Don't let the yellow non aggressive creature make it fail, or then we have to wait.
Once you clear the non aggro, then turn it back on again.
Same holds true with red aggro's.
Once you have hit them for a pass on XP shut it off then on again.(where you determine where to shut it off is the skill and practice part of the game).
BOTTOM LINE Don't let the creatures make your Mask Scent fail....YOU shut it off before THEY can shut it off, then you can turn it right back on again.
Hope this helps.
I've found pretty decent success using mask scent. I'm a Bothan though and I think the extra camo bonus really helps here. I did pretty well with just Exp II.
One question though: Is it just me or do white and lower cons get harder to successfully mask?
I used to get pretty consistent 78 or so XP from Giant Gubbers when they were yellow. Now that they're white I've noticed that I'm not getting the XP as often. They don't break the mask, I just don't get the XP.
Maybe the con also has an effect - either on the success rate or on the distance I have to be before the mask generates XP.
Just a thought...

You know...
The more I experiment with MaskScent, the more I'm convinced that the system makes a hidden success roll on your initial attempt.ÃÂ After that, when you encounter aggressive creatures, their chance to spot you is based on your previously determined success roll.
The reason I believe this is as follows.ÃÂ On many occasions, I'll mask, and then I'll run close to a pack of mobs. (50m or so.) Close enough that I can see most of them on my 64m radar. I get all of them very quickly with no breaks.ÃÂ I've then moved away to another group of the same mob.ÃÂ Again, all successes. After a bit, something will break the mask and I'll put it back up.ÃÂ I can then walk up to another group of the same type of creature and get broken immediately. Mask again... Broken immediately again etc...
If this is the case, we might get more success by creeping up to a pack and turning MS on and off until you get XP.ÃÂ If you get quick XP, chances are that you got a good "roll" and can get XP from the rest of the pack.
Has anyone else noticed this?
