Thread: Why do creatures chase me when they haven't broken my mask scent?

I just got explore 4 last night, so for the first time mask scent was actually working enough to give me experience. I was sneaking up on lairs of mostly blue and white, occasionally yellow con aggro mobs just to try it out (hermit spiders mostly).

- I'd make sure I was more than 64m (usually 70 or so) from the closest one

- I'd mask scent, then go prone and crawl toward them

- Occasionally I'd get exp, usually when I got within 50 m of one. I thought you get exp when getting within 60m, but that didn't seem to happen.

- Often, I'd get within 50m of about 3-4 of them, but I'd only get exp for one. Not sure why I didn't get exp for the others

- Often (once in every 2-3 attempts) one of the mobs would very obviously start to chase me. I didn't get any "creature has detected you" message, in fact the mask scent icon was still active, but I'd have to jump to my feet and run (not burst run, just normal run) back the direction I came. The creature would chase me, right on my heels, but not in attack mode, until I was 120m or so away from the group, then give up. This happened so often I started using it as an effective way of breaking the camp: once the creature had chased me that far, if it was a blue con I could easily kill it and harvest without worrying about aggroing the rest of the camp.

Is that how mask scent is supposed to work? Do other people see that happen?

I would guess since they cant smell you with it up...they may have just managed to see you???

I'm still trying to figure MS out myself, but Ricbr's idea sounds plausible "Hmm.. there's something over there, but I can't smell it, so I better go and have a closer look"

I have noticed sometimes with maskscent you get no message until your right into the mob. I believe if you keep track of your network status you will fine that the ping is high or you are not recieveing data from the servers.

My guess is that is Maskscent is defined as a "provoking" action - in a similar vein as taming - but not nearly as beneficial.
