I've never made any items in crates so no idea how it works but I do know medics can make crates full of stims, which is very nice for inventory management and hotkeying items.Can we do the same with traps? If I can make 1 crate of traps holding 50 traps each of 6 charges I'll be a very happy camper (and trapper)

Yes you can. You need an equipment factory.

I've already made a run of 99 Noise Maker traps off my friend's equipment factory, and I must agree that it is a wonderful way to manage inventory. Here is what you need to do

Collect enough bone and hide (and meat or metal or polymer) to make the number of traps you wish. You MUST use the same resources to make the schematic and the resulting traps. I can't really see a reason not to go for as many as possible, since the price of harvestables has gone down lately. In general, if you want to make 100 traps, i'd recommend resources for 105. This will cover critical failures when trying to craft the schematic.

Find a general crafting station in your favorite town or your friendly factory owner's house. Craft as normal, and experiment on the trap if you like... I did, simply to get some more complexity, and to see if it made much of a difference.

Create the schematic instead of the prototype. This will place a trap schematic in your datapad.

Go to the factory, open the hopper to put in your raw materials, and place the template in. Turn the machine on, and then go do missions or explore or craft other stuff while you wait.

I think it took about 2 hours to craft all of my traps, but I was off hunting at the time, so I might have missed when it actually stopped.

You can carry one crate with you, and just doubleclick it to get a new stack of traps out. Stick the others in your safety deposit for when your first runs empty.
