My friend experienced same problems with trapping but he solved easily when I prepared to him a +21 trapp bonus food. He also used a good trapping droid and was able to trap also mob 2 levels upon his ones.

P.S. Avoid to master a prof before ranger. It could help a lot since the level of the player is not too high
