My main profession is Teras Kasi and I'm thinking about taking the trapping line of skills all the way up through Ranger. What resources should I expect to use? Will I need Forage skills or Survey maybe?

Also, is it worth the time and points to go beyond Master Scout just to get higher trapping skills?

If you are just looking for a way to Control Mobs and reduce their stats so you can melee them, then I suggest that all you need to do is get Scout Trap 3 (don't even bother with Ranger) as the first 3 levels of scout trapping will give you the traps you will use. Adhesive Mesh is nice in that it does up to 40% Action damage, but you only get 2 traps per bundle which is poor pack usage.

You'll want to use traps that lower melee defense and slow creatures... so with Trap III you'll have all of those. The only benefit to the Ranger line is that you get AOE traps that do the same thing as the earlier scout traps. If you are meleeing an entiremob of critters .. then you're nuts anyways..

The traps all use a combination of Hide/Bone and sometimes Metal or Meat. I haven't notice a huge difference in quality of materials... so to answer your question... you may need to sample some metal but I think you can do that with novice Artisan... either that or just buy a load of metal on the bazaar every so often if you don't want to waste the skillpoints.

In addition, I haven't seen ANY difference in trap behavior based on what level of trapping exp you have... the only reason you have Trapping skill level is to determine what traps you can use. (ie someone with only +10 trapping can't throw an Adhesive Mesh).

Thats my recommendation...

Also keep in mind that traps only work on Creatures and not Humanoids, so depending one what types of missions you like doing traps may or may not help

Glow-wire, Wiremesh and Noise Maker are my primary traps. That isn't to say I don't use the others, but I fight with one-handed weapons so I just want to make my life easier.

I will report on observation with your trapping skill. I was out on Lok hunting the Big Lizards, and my traps (at Advance Trapping I) were doing nothing. My friend with Adv Trapping IV was affecting the creatures. So your trapping skill does determine the level of creature you can consitantly affect. However, for creatures that you will be soloing, you should be fine with Scout Trapping III or IV.

I'm about to Master Scout for the 3rd time so I can try out Ranger and something occured to me...

1) Can I use traps that I can't yet make?

2) If so, will I get less XP for using more advanced traps?

3) Finally, what trap is required for using on stronger creatures, such as pikets? I'm also working thru the pistoleer tree and pikets seem the be the steadiest, most consistent XP, but as you well know, the lower level traps have no effect on them.

Thanks-

Jajok,

I rarely have a problem with noisemakers or adhesive mesh traps not hitting. Try those.

As for using traps you can't make - I've honestly never tried it. But if it works the same as camps, you can probably use one level above what you can make. I should try that on TC and let you know.

Looking for any info I can get on traps. Havent had a chance to browse in-depth since I'm at work, but if anyone can answer my questions or point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

What are the different traps and effects they impart?
What's the duration of those traps and how often do they stick on high level mobs? Does a Master Ranger stick traps a lot more than an x/x/x/4 Ranger? Whats the range on traps?

Any help is appreciated since I can't spend a lot of time cruising the area. If the boss catches me, I'm toast!

To quote Tariannor:

Wire Mesh >makes target vulnerable to melee attacks (works)

Bone spur >blinds target (works)

Stink bomb >makes target vulnerable to "state effects" ( dizzy, stun, KD......) (works)

Noise Maker > stuns target (works)

P-dart > tranquillizes target ( slows movement ) (works)

L-dart > tranquillizes target ( slows targets attacks ) (works)

Glow wire > makes target vulnerable to attacks (works)

Glow juice > makes target vulnerable to ranged attacks (works)

Adhesive mesh > entangles target ( slows or stops movement ) (?)

Flash bomb >blinds multiple targets in area (?)

Sonic pulse > stuns and dizzys mutliple targets in area (works some times)

Well, AFAIK, sticking traps is your trap level versus the mob's CL level. That is the crux of the trapping XP issue people are having right now.

Regardless of your CL, an x/x/x/4 Ranger has a trapping modifier of +90. Meaning, without any other considerations, he should be able to stick a trap on a CL90 mob. A Master Ranger is granted another +10, and so has a +100 trapping modifier.

I don't know the duration of the state effects.

How often they stick is an inexact science, but if as a Master Ranger CL80 you're hunting CL80'ish mobs, you should be sticking more often than not, due to your trapping level being +100. If, however, you're hunting a CL90'ish Ancient Krayt, then the traps will stick less often, due to the mob CL being closer to your own trapping modifier. You might not want to stop at x/x/x/4 Ranger, if you're going to be hunting the highest level mobs.

Range appears to be between 40-50 meters, although I might be off.I've never trusted the examine blurb for any game items such as range of thrown weapons, as there are too many other variables, however, if I pull at the 65m limit ofmy bowcaster, I generally cannot throw a p-dart till the next round. After the mob is closing.
