I began playing this game in the final stage of beta and then of course had my new character up and running on launch day on the Tarquinas server. I picked Dearic, Talus as my starting city at that time. I remember having to dodge dangerous, aggressive mobs on my way to mission waypoints and trying to find safe places to set up camp. I remember seeing other players out hunting or exploring the land and seeing fledgling towns forming along the riverbanks.
Today, with my new Novice Scout on Flurry, I travelled to Talus to visit my old stomping grounds that I remembered so fondly. Well, Dearic is an all but deserted ghost town. Well, that's fine, I want to see the countryside anyway. I set out on my way and saw a fewanimals clustered not too far out of town. But once I was 1000 meters out of town, the wildlife disappeared. I ran for 4000 meters and saw NOTHING. It is kind of depressing
It used to be that I would travel around to all the planets to investigate the meat, hides, bone, and fish so that I could get the best quality for my contacts. I thought I would check the mission listing on Talus to see if I could just get some to spawn but all it would give me was Meatlump missions
I understand the need to free up space on their servers but this is ridiculous.
Why did they stop letting people pick their starting planets and force them to start in Mos Eisley?

Unfortunately, most of the planets are this way.
If you play in the morning after a reboot, you can find creatures everywhere. As the day wears on, you find fewer and fewer spawns. There is an overall pool of spawns. Once too many static spawns are active, all the dynamic ones get left out.

That is very unfortunalte for the players that can only play after working a full day (like me). No wonder I'm hvaing such a hard time progressing through the profession trees!

Altho there are fewer random spawn, the missions spawn just fine. This would tend to make me think that group hunting is being encouraged, as it will be the only way to do more than 2 missions without returning to a city. Unless you want to beat on what's just outside a city for xp. (worked for me as a noob)
The other alternative is to find where there ain't people. Rori seems to generally be desered on most servers. Yavin is not that popular of a place. Just choose your missions wisely.

That's the whole point. Planets that have no one on them (or very few on them) aren't as populated by random spawns as, say, Corellia or Tatooine. But I noticed that even on the heavily populated planets, random spawns are few and far between.
Come on, doesn't anyone think it would be better if you had to watch your step a little while traversing the land? It's boring running for thousands of meters and seeing not one animal.

It used to be bad trying to cross the circle of death on the tough planets, but now it has gone to the other extreme. I went out trying to find a creature I wanted to sample that didn't have missions (happened to be on Talus), and there were very few rare spawns and I never found the dalyrakes I wanted. Used to I couldn't make it to my harvesters 1k from town without seeing a few nests, but now, nothing.
