Yes - if you've got a good one, you'll get more than you can with your base skills alone.

Yes, the droids do help to increase the harvest. Here are some useful links I used when researching harvest droids (sorry, I don't know how to hypertext them):

When you can afford it, using Veghash will also increase your harvest; Veghash and droid together give you the biggest yield.
One of the limitations I found is if you're a Rifle-specific marksman and you use Take Cover, you won't be able to command your droid until you break cover.

Git yerself ona them fancy combat droids!
Someone gave me a probot the other day... oh man... wish I had him long ago! He doesn't do an awful lot of damage compared to some others (like 150-190) but it takes all the aggro baby! And since it has a HAM of nearly 5000... that's a lot of time for a little newbie scout like me to be plinking away on the pistols!
Plus Batteries are like 1000cr per 5... and repair kits (1000 dmg repair) are 1000cr for 18! Cheepie cheepie cheep cheep!
I can't wait to get home and find a Hambaba (I think that's what they're called) to aggro on my probot... and just throw some traps at the fool while my trapping xp goes through the roof... that's the hope anyways! We'll see when I get outta this hell-hole called work!

As a Rifleman who needs to harvest for my clients, I use a harvest droid. But my Ranger uses a Probot (named Fred) and I just love having him around. Doesn't do much damage, but when the Stormtroopers start chasing me I send Fred in to block for me while I make a quick exit. He's sacrificed himself for me on a number of occasions.
Now you can get droids with self-healing modules so if you want a true tank to take aggro for you while you trap or shoot from range look for one with high self-healing and low damage (so they don't take away from your XP). Once I get out of the need for high harvests that's what I'm thinking about getting.
