I have a question on trapping.

I have read on the guide "From Novice to Master" that the larger the critters the more XP you'll get. Well I have been trying to get my Trapping4 for the past 3 nights now and last night I decided to try my luck on big critters and I must have thrown about 25 to 35 traps and every single one of them have felled.

Am I doing something wrong?

Well to put it simply, try something not quite as difficult. The chance of a trap "landing" on a given creature depends on the that creatures difficulty as well as your trapping skill (that's one of the reasons the experience reward increases with difficulty).

If the traps you are tossing don't work on big critters (Please tell me you were not trying to trap a Krayt), drop down a few levels.

Even Master Rangers can't get all the traps to stick on some of the big guys - 50% on ancient bull rancors is common.

Also, and I say this again, trapping is the first line you should have mastered. If you routinely toss a trap or two at creatures before killing, you max trapping well before the other two scout lines. Remember this for Ranger, trap, trap, shoot (Pdart and glowwire are my choices).

Trapping a squill (not mountain squill, wont work) = 139 xp per trap

Mountain dewbacks were my friend, they didn't DB me when I went incap. I threw traps at them over and over, usually got 7 or 8 off before I fell incap. I sat, auto-healed, then went again. When I went incap, auto-healed, 10 minutes had passed, so you won't die. Don't tell me you went to Dathomir or Endor.

it's akin to this....if you take a low level trap, and take it up against a more difficult critter.......

well think about trying to attack a krayt with a CDEF (pistol, rifle, carbine...whatever)................you're definately not gonna get very far.......

best idea is to build up on the smaller critters first, then move up to the larger ones. If your traps seem to bounce off, go for a weaker creature.

Thanks guys, I knew that trap could not have worked on large critters, but what throw me off was the Guide who was saying quote"Another often cited tactic is to grab a friend or two, and attack a large creature. The larger creatures offer the opportunity to make significant trapping XP off them in a short period of time. The average Fambaa or Torton yields 400 scout XP PER TRAP. So if you can hold out from getting killed instantly, you'll be able to pull 10k+ XP off of a Fambaa during an average fight."

I just wanted to make sure I was not doing something wrong.

Funny thing is - I got Trapping 4 off the Fambaa in the Emperor's Retreat mission. Maybe they got nerfed.

Not always true. With my first Ranger I worked up the Scout and Ranger trap trees very quickly because I'd hunt with groups. While they shot, I trapped. This time around my Scout has mostly been solo because I just don't see hunting groups forming like they used to (and I'm too shy to start my own). Also, I worked my way to Novice Rifleman so the last thing I want to do is draw attention to myself by trapping first. So where do I find myself now? I've maxed out all my Scout experience points (I have enough to get my Novice Ranger and then some) by hunting for high quality resources on dangerous planets and I still have the fourth trap and survival boxes to finish. On top of that, since I spent my time hunting resources for others, I don't have a lot of bones and hides for myself to grind out tents and traps. So now I'm out there hunting big game for the bones and hide and not getting any Scout experience for it.

I mastered Trapping IV in ten minutes, although I was extremely lucky. But heres how I did it:

I got buffed, made about 50 - 60 of the same trap and placed each set of five on my lower tool bar (the one you press 'shift' to produce the action) and set off S - SE of Anchorhead towards the hills. Most creatures there arent affected by Traps earned from Trapping III that produce significant xp, appart from Greater Desert Womp Rats. I picked one rat, and constantly threw all the traps I made untill there was none left on my bottom tool bar, I didnt attackthe Rat untill I ran out of traps and the buff allowed me to throw as many traps as I liked without worrying about my action bar droppingtoo low. If I recall correctly, its about 15000 trapping xp for Trapping IV, I gained 250 Trapping xp *per* trap, this was from only one Greater Desert Womp Rat.

So there you go, I recall that only three or four of the total amount of traps I made missed. Thats quite a high success rate, to gain trapping III, repeat this process on Scyks and the larger Beetles (Rokc Beetles, I think they're called) and it is also possible to achieve without a buff in a small amount of time. This is an extremely good way of acheiving Novice Ranger in a few hours.

Hope this helped you, and anyone wanting to achieve master scout.

(Also make note that Trapping is a good way of gaining scout xp (via harvesting) at the same time)
