From what we can tell, it's based on your trapping skill and the toughness of the critter. When I was a Master Ranger, I could throw an AM and stop a gnort dead in his tracks. At the same time, it barely made a Krayt blink twice before beating me to death.

It doesn't really have to. It's not a "root" type trap. It's designed to slow the guy down, and give you a shot or two more. Think about what it actualy does - it throws up a bunch of goo and the target gets trapped up in it. A small critter - sure, it won't be able to get free that quick. But for a bigger one, it's blow through it. Think of it like a spider web- if you're a fly, your screwed. If you're a human, you get annoyed and then you swat the spider.

I seem to recall someone did a study on this.
Shooting or otherwise hitting the critter decreases the trap lifepsan. To about nothing. two shots I think kill it.
Restraint, which we see during examine, may have some effect on the lifespan also. Higher level critters are immune, go toss one at a krayt and he laffs at ya.
And, as they only come in two packs, and take so darn long to make, and use poly, which I can sell, poop on using em. Pdart and glow wire, pdart and glow wire. And a sonic to scare the noobs.
