Thread: I am baffled by /maskscent

I can't figure out how to make this work. I have read the wisdom on the boards and it just isn't working for me. Here is what I did today:

Was about 70m from an aggro mob. I disarmed as suggested by someone else here. I held Shift as I walked to about 55m from a creature and I stopped. I waited. And waited. After a time, my Mask Scent wore off and I got no xp. I tried again. Same thing. I tried again. Same thing. Then I just tried continuously walking towards the creature and they detected me.

I was under the impression that you had to be within 64m for this skill to work. Can someone tell me what I did wrong?

What mob were you trying to MS past, and what level Exploration do you have?

If your +Camo skills are high enough, I think you get an automatic success against low-level critters. This doesn't give you any XP. I've noticed I can put MS up and waltz through a herd of kreetles with Exploration 4. Nothing attacks me or detects me, but no XP either.

I think it's the equivalent of not getting combat XP for killing stuff that's way too easy for you.

If you were trying it on easy critters, look for some dark blue or white cons and try it on them.

This was with Explore II. The creature was a Crazed Durni and it conned red to me while I was disarmed and yellow if I had a weapon. The confusing part to me was that I wasn't detected, was at 55m, it was a yellow/red con, and I didn't get any xp.

Are crazed durni agressive? A creature has to be agressive to be award XPs.

I see a lot of people having trouble with this skill. I've done, and am still doing, very well with it.

I seem to get XPs when I'm near creatures that I really don't want to notice me. I'm around those creatures a lot because I like to push myself when it comes to exploring the wilderness.

You need to have at least Explore III to have much luck at all with Maskscent. Explore IV is much better.

Yes, crazed durni are aggro, believe it or not. However, no matter how tough they may be to you at a given level, they will now only give one resource. This seems to have been a stealth fix in the last patch.

what wasa stealth fix? I thought mobs only ever gave one resource.. you just had your choice of what you wanted to harvest. Sorry but your post confused me... was justcurious what the "stealth fix" was.

Alright...here is more real world data. I was 20m from one of these aggro mobs and I hit /maskscent. It never broke and wore off and I got no xp (I assume it pops up and tells you that you got xp, just like other skills). So what gives? How can /maskscent not fail 20m from an animal, yet I get no xp? Do I have to be 70m away, hit /mascent and continuously walk towards the anima?

i'm very confused too....

I'm Bothan - so have the racial bonus - I got Exp II after the nerf...

It seems so random. I keep it on when i can, but usually get no exp or detection from aggressive critters 25m or less away. Then last night I'm running and see 120 scout exp 120 scout exp 120 scout exp. woo-hoo! the mobs were 50m away.

I'm still undetected, I try to run back and have it happen again - nothing. no detection, no exp. went to find other agressive blue / white mobs - nothing.

oh well, i guess i should be happy i got some exp, right? :-/

maskscent seems to make a skill check for all mobs on your radar. If any of them fail the check (aggro or non-aggro) it will cause the scent to go off. If you apply it while in range of aggro mobs it doesn't seem to require a skill check at that point. But if you run out of range, and then back into range it will do a skill check for them. Likewise if you either get seen or xp from specific mobs, you cant get more xp from those mobs unless you run out of range and back into range.

And definately the skill is worthless at explore 2 level, and it's marginally useful at explore 3, more so if your a bothan. As a bothan I find it about 40% relaible at explore 4. Interestingly enough my skill mod for Camouflage is 45%.

Crazed durni show up red to me on the map, which I believe makes them aggressive. I suppose maybe it could be some kind of bug where they really aren't supposed to be. I will have to approach closer to one and see if it attacks. I never get closer than like 50m, so I am not sure if I need to get closer to actually have them come after me.

The best test is to walk up and pet them. I do that all the time, it impresses the lay-dies (said in best Ladies Man voice from SNL). If the skill works on each creature you can jog around the camp with no trouble. If some detect you the others will ignore while you fight those that jump on you.

By 1 resource, I meant 1 hide, or 1 bone, instead of the 5 or 6 you used to get.
