Thread: Are we becoming useless?

i was in a medical center today, and i overheard two players talking. one was a medic and the other an artisan. the medic had mentioned that he was going out hunting for meat. WHAT? didnt he take the medic profession to heal people? now i can understand people wanting to change professions, they play for a bit and realize they want to do something else. but...he didnt want to be a scout, he wanted to harvest the meat so he didnt have to pay for it to make stimpaks. if this is the cast, what good are scouts to the game?

if everyone takes on the scout skill to make camps and harvest meat, why would anyone be just a scout? or more important, what about all of us busting our butts to get to Ranger?? what good will they be?

there are exceptions to cross classing....

scouts SHOULD be able to heal themselves. it makes sense. a scout should be out for long periods of time alone. i go days without going into a city sometimes, so i learned the medic profession to heal myself. i also use it to help in the medical center when i happen to be there, because i often play in the wee hours of the morning and there MIGHT be 1 medic on the entire planet thats healing people. BUT....i almost always let people know not to tip me. i dont mind healing people because i know how aggrivated i get when theres no medics around. well maybe thats because theyre all out hunting?
this may sound hyppocritical but if you think logically about it, its not. scouts DO need a way to heal themselves in one way or another. i dont like crafting so i dont wanna make stimpaks. i hate even making camps and traps, but the camps need to be made for people to heal out in the middle of nowhere.

im finding more and more hides/bones/meat being left on the bazaar untouched. right now i probably have a few hundred resources up and they havent been touched for days. i dont overcharge. i NEVER charge more than 3cr/each. why arent they selling? i see people posting on here saying they sell them for 10cr/each with no problems ever. where are you selling it???

so my question is, what good are we to the overall ecomomy and community of the game?

I'm not sure why it is that people think that just becauseplayer chooses one starting profession that they will only be working onone profession once they in game. It is possible to choose Medic as a starting profession, then get in game and immediately train as a Novice Marksman so that as a Medic they can also go out on hunts and be useful in a fight, and perhaps begin training up to pistoleer on the side.

A Medic trained in basic scouting skills, at least while the character is young and has skill points to use, makes perfect sense to me. The scouting skill allows the Medic to build a camp, and heal out in the woods instead of coming back to town. The same would work fora dancer or musician interested in exploring and doing a little hunting instead of just hanging inside a cantina. Granted in later life they may need those 15 points for novice scouting to spend on something else and need to untrain it, but at the start of the game why not put them to use?

So its a little silly to complain about a Medic running out to get meat, just because you are a scout and can do that too. Perhaps if you hate sitting around waiting on your health to regenerate, you should consider training novice medic for awhile too to have access to /tend damage, if only for a little while until you need the points back.

if you read my post i DID say i trained in novice medic to heal myself.

and im just complaining because its frustrating that the only way we can make money right now is by doing destroy missions. they get REAL boring. i know its smart and makes perfect sense to cross class.

im just venting a little here. wanted to know what everyone else is doing for cash (besides destroy missions that is). i get bummed when i hear there are droid makers with 1.5 MILLION credits right now, and the most ive ever had is around 40k at one time. and its not becasue i dont bust my butt! i do, but i try and do a little more than just power level. today was the first time i did that and i only did that because Trapping IV and Survival IV arent the easiset things to get.

everyone else complains about something on here, let me have a minute or two. :-p

i certainly dont fault them for doing it, because i probably would too. but it also makes me mad when i see them harvesting meat for stimpaks, then CHARGE us on top of it. take money out of a scouts pocket then make us pay for the items after they make them.

i know this will all change when more people get to higher ranks, its just frustrating now.

how do YOU all make your money?

Rhyk,

I make my money the old fashioned way - gnort missions and selling hides and bone. But that's not all you can sell. You'd be surpised - people are selling AND making money off of tents, traps, meat, and lots of other items that you'd think there would be no market for.

You're a scout - you're supposed to be out there, self-sufficient, living off the land.I know it's tough when you walk around and see the artisans with their money bursting out of their pockets (the ones that can make any), but think about it this way...while that Medic may run out in the field to get his hide, many of them won't. You probably don't go and make your own clothes, do you? Or food? Or blasters? You could - but you don't want to. That's how it is for many players too. And while he may be able to go out and blast his way to a few bits of meat, he won't be raking it in, selling 1k containers of bone, either.

As for the everyone else bitching - well, there are some people who won't ever be satisfied. Don't turn into one of 'em.

Wait till people start crying that there isnt enough materials out there.

Ranger will probably be one of the more underated and underused professions in the game, being one would probably be more profitable than one may think.

About medics cross-training, dont forget that there are a set number of skills you can learn, those medics who decide now to hunt for their own organics are going to become doctors or whatnot who will have to decide if they want the 15 points they spent on Scout to maybe go to mastering their true profession or some other skill. In time they will be more and more specialized players who dont have the time, energy, or desire to scout half the time. Now about you're items not selling, are the items of good quality?I find if you know what the artisans and medics want they'll buy it. Look at the quality of the hides, meat and bones, not just overall quality, but for example, shock and toughness for armorsmiths, flavor and potential energy for medics. When I sell something on the bazaar which is rarely right now because I know enough artisans who want to buy from me directly, it sells pretty quickly and I sell my organics for at least 5.

Just a hint to all those who are having trouble making money. Every character is allowed to build structures on up to 10 lots for the purpose of harvesting, processing or selling resources. Use these lots to your advantage as they are the single greatest assets of any character. And, since scouts have very little need for resoruces and crafted items, you should be able to sell 95% of whatever you produce. Good luck.

I kind of wished they let us experiment with traps and camps the way artisans do with other things, because essentially if I make one out of Torton shell and krayt bones, it's just as good as one made out of worrts and nunas. That doesn't sit well with me. And Bone armor (our biggest industry right now) is going to eventually go the way of the CDEF, so that in a few months the price on hides will possibly go below a credit per unit. Sure I can make moneyin any number of ways, like Skeena mentioned, but where's the fun in that. Hunting a good spot is actually really fun, especially by myself (I hate grouping in SWG, for some reason, it's just not fun right now, especially for scouts). I don't know that this realy lends anything to the conversation, but I sympathise with the original posters feelings.

I hope this headache goes away soon, then maybe I can think. But I forgot to add that, as scouts can build camps, we can most certainly heal ourselves without the aid of medicine. Camps seem to heal faster than med centers (though I've never tested this), and if you want to get your survival XP easily, then just pop one up after a few fights and look at the forums for a few minutes. I usually end up healed fully after 15-20 minutes no matter what I do, as long as I don't wait too long between camps. Battle Fatigue, now that's another issue altogether....hmmm. My battle fatigue is always through the roof by the time I make it back to town.
