Thread: What is maskscent?
Maskscent is not very useful at the moment.
It was suppose to prevent aggressive animals from attacking. It breaks too easily for that and now has a 60 second timer to reapply, so when it breaks your only option is to run.
It was suppose to be a way to get additional scouting XP, but against high con mob, it hardly works but osscasional you get some XP, but combined with the 60 second timer, it just not worth spending time with. Against low level animals it works better but only gives 1XP.
The timer was a fix for an exploit some were using to get scouting xp too fast. So they added a timer to it and made it pretty useless.
There was a petition to fix it, but it's been ignored it seems.
I say make the skill useful or make it a way to get additional scouting xp. Right now it's fairly worthless for either.
You get it at Explore II I belive.. Or is it I? Or do I suck? ![]()
And yeah, it wasn't balanced, it was nerfed. :-p
I agree that maskscent needs to be corrected somehow. I hate having to wait 60 sec. to re-use it. It really sucks when you happen to be surrounded by red cons while hunting.
However, I have had some luck in it. I currently go after giant gubbur's , crazed durni's , diseased rats. They almost never stray too far from their nesting ground. IF there are tons of yellow cons around then i try to pick them off first. The yellow cons seem to break maskscent quicker especially if there are large concentrations of them around you. I just keep watching my radar and move into positions where i think i won't get spotted by wandering yellow cons or respawning red cons. I then set up and use maskscent just before i go for the red con kills. I try to stay at a range of just under 60m out from them...i have expert rifle skill. I've noticed that when i take my first shot , most times i instantly gain Scout XP from the maskscent. After about 4 shots to the head, the critter finally notices where i am and comes charging. By then thou, its' just about dead. This whole time my maskscent is still on and working , even while engaged in melee combat. I gain about 200-300 weapon xp and about 79-100 scout xp per kill...depending on the creature. Now, i have gone after bigger game myself...like taking on a Baggerset. That got my heartrate up seeing that it almost got me, but with my above tips...i was able to bag that sucker ..too bad i can't display them as trophy kills..HEHEE
Anyhow, my point about maskscent is that it will work ...at least for me it has. I've taken down several red cons in a row and my maskscent has remained on for several minutes before being broken. I once had a red con respawn less than 10m from me and it never saw/smelled me.

I finally got mask scent to work. I started getting about 120 to 235 xp per creature depending on what I was masking against. I'll agree it is still horribly bugged but is in fact working.
The thing to get Mask Scent working is to have no yellows on your radar if it's set to 65m range. so basically all yellows need to be at least 70-75m away from you to get this to work. This of course is rare and horribly annoying. Also Mask does not appear to work against humanoid types. Guess they're more reliant uppon sight than smell, which makes sense.
Now the fun part, getting exp from MS. You can kinda sorta do it running, but walking will yield better results. You need to get at least 30m away fro mthe mob. Then get away from it. do this, and it works you get xp. Beware yellows will almost always point you out.
