Just wondering... if I build my camp near the water (dunno where because I've never fished before) can I fish and be in my camp making both types of survival xp?

It's tough, but it's possible. You've gotta finesse where you drop the camp, because generally the size of the camp will push you just far enough away from the water to be able to cast.

The better way is to sit in your camp and grind out practice camps and traps while you wait. That'll be faster than fishing anyway.

Fishing does grant survival XP, but it's not that significant. It's kinda just a bonus, rather than something you can use as part of your levelling strategy.

It does work - I've done it, and I know people have done it.

But it's very tough to do, and you've got to get the camp placement just right. Which is why I suggested not to bother.
