Well, I just picked up SWG acouple days ago and picked scout. I am a total newbie to this game and I am seriously confused lol. I am too used to the level system so I was overwhelmed at first. I read the from novice to master guide but I still have acouple of questions. How do I know when I am able to go out and hunt the big game like banthas and stuff like that? I started on Tatooine so I could go kill them but after I got all my scout skill to tier 2 the newbie mobs still are an even fight. I have tier 2 scouting but it says my skill isn't high enough for mask scent even after I trained.. I don't get that. Well, I suppose thats all for now.

Gral,

Glad you finally got that out. Lithium (the board system) can be kinda quirky.

First things first. You can tell if you've got a good chance to kill a critter by look at the little colored dot next to them when you target them. If it's green - no problem. Light blue, slightly harder. Blue - even match. White - 40-60 chance of winning. Yellow - 75% chance your dead. Red - don't even think about it.

This is called "con-ing", which is short for "considering". If someone says "Oh, they con red to me", that means they very, very tough.

That's how you can tell if you can take 'em.

Now, since there aren't "levels" what increases your ability to take those critters?

Well, first - I hope you trained "marksman" as well as scout. If not, go do that. Then get yourself the best weapon you can afford.

The better your weapons, the higher your weapons skills and the easier those critters are to take down. And you'll notice that they will con a different level. A newbie is going to see that Kaadu con red to them, but they con Blue to me right now.

As for scouting - you've got 4 individual tiers, which are all independent of each other. In order for maskscent to work you've got to train both the Explore I and Explore II boxes.

Always be sure to check your in-game holocron for other info and FAQs like this - you can pull it up using control-h.

And I'm going to resticky my "Guide to Novice Scouting", as it seems Christmas has resulted in a flood of new players.

The thing about this game is that there is different kinds of xp and different skills to be gained. You can be a Master Ranger, or a Master Artisan, but without any marksman skills, or brawler skills, Newbie mobs will still be an even fight. If you want to hunt the banthas and bigger, such as Krayt Dragons, you need to get combat skills. Go train in Marksman or Brawler, which brings me to the next point. You can have skills in one class (i.e. Scout), or you can have skills in multiple classes (i.e. Scout, Marksman, and Medic.) That is one of the things that is so great about this game. And if you find out later you want to be an artisan instead of a marksman...no problem. you can sacrifice skills and change the direction of you character anytime you want.

My advice to you if you want to hunt big game, is first decide what kind of weapon you want to hunt with, Pistol, Rifle, Carbine, Staff, Sword, Two-Handed Sword, or Bare Handed. If you want to hunt with one of the guns, get Marksman. If you want to use any of the others, get brawler.

To get the Novice skill, such as novice marksman or novice brawler, find an NPC trainer in one of the cities. Any training you need after novice, find a player character to train you. It is a hell of alot cheaper and people are always in need of apprenticeship points.

As for the mask scent thing, I can not help you. It sounds like a bug

Hope this helps. Any other questions?

Yea I talked to a guy in game and I picked up marksman and bought a CDEF Rifle .... best I could find in my area. My rifle exp seems to be flying compared to scouting. I didn't realize mob con was relevant to just your weapon skill. At what lvl skill can you take on the big mobs? I've already reached teir 3 with rifles. I just keep getting two missions to relatively close areas. I grab the ones that have me kill lairs of animals so I do get the scout exp for harvesting but for every lair there is only maybe 5-10 mobs. That isn't bad but then again it isn't awsome. Is the mission thing a good idea or a bad one? Thanks for all the feedback btw.

Grav,

The mission thing is fine. It's what I did to level.

Make sure you're harvesting as much as you can.

And to be honest - the quickest way to level Scout is to get in with some friends who are higher level that you and have them aid you in hunting. That way you can take down the bigger critters. Doing it along is that hard way - trust me, I did it.

There was no way to power level when I mastered Scout - no one was "powered" yet.

Yeah
Iam new too I agree you should find a hunting party or a group of friends who will go with you. Also scouting is a good way to make some cash easy. Basically if you are harvesting bone or hides you can use em or sell them (the quality will be what you will want to look at). However dont worry about selling stuff right off the bat ...took a few good friends a few times to explain to me how to tell if its good quality or not. put it this way I just sold 12k worth of bone I harvested from some of the bigger mobs on different planets. Now You will most likely notice that the Exploration and Hunting xp will go up fairly fast. I got to tier 4 in exploration in about a week and same with hunting. Trapping isnt bad its just annoying to craft i know :S. You should do it sooner than later though. I waited too long and now iam not wanting to go back to killing the smaller mobs but Iam biting my lip and doing it for the trapping xp. So thats takes care of 3 of the 4 trees some what. The 4th tree is the worst type of xp in my opinion. Why? Its very boring, simple as that. But if you read the Sticky:

"From Novice to Master - How to Become a Master Scout Version 3.0 (GAME GUIDE)"

Then you should have a fairly good idea of what to do. If you are on Valcyn you could add me to your friends list or mail me whatever. Asipa is my name so give me a msg sometime I would be glad to help you ...but I only play on Valcyn at the time so its kind of a shot in the dark if you are playing there.

Good Luck
