I am new to the MMO environment and have just purchased SWG & JTL. Have done some reading on the various professions and see myself as a Scout / Artisan to start. Not sure where that will lead but it will give me some place to start. Would like to know a good server to join to get the feel for how it all works without getting in peoples way but still having some fun. Need a guiding hand to get started ...

this is an excellent way to start the game!
I am on the Intrepid galaxy, it's fairly populated, with quite a few helpful people.
If you decide to join my galaxy, I live in the city of Mos Tuskia. Ingame name is Hakai. Speak to Dalik about joining the city, and i'm sure one of the guilds in the area will be willing to help you out.

As you can see I am still getting used to the message board interface, Sorry for the 1/2 posts. What I need is some help even with the interface. Not sure how to even talk to someone on-line. I know, pretty sad isn't it. I told youI was a newbie to MMO. I have started reading the manual but need some seat time to make things real. Need some place quiet & out of the way to practice without getting in peoples way. Once I have the interface down, then i will be ready to start the adventure ...

I'm about to hit Master Scout and am on Gorath. It's a little less populated than most of the rest but has a very strong group of people that look out for beginners and go out of their way to help. Would love to see more scouts on Gorath if you're still looking.

Gentlemen
Thanks for the support, It's nice to see not all On Line gamers have gone to the Dogs. Although I am not a young pup ( wrong side of 45 ) I hope that I can still enjoy the SWG experience and contribute to making the experience better for everyone.
DeltaXi65 - I have downloaded both of your suggestions, read them a couple of times and have a few thousand more times to go. I see you are on Bloodifn server, what is that like for a newbie scout ?
Fourthnail - I have a couple of days off now and plan to get myself started. Gorath sounds like as good a place as any to start. Once I am set up and figure out how to use the interface I will give you a shout.
Are there any timezone issues with the servers. I am on west coast ( Canada ) time and don't want to sign up for a server where everyone is awake when I am sleeping. I have about 3000 more questions but two stick out from post that I have read. What is meant by "Grinding" and what is "Slicing ", Iknow "Newbie question

Bantha,
You need some combat skills to go along with scout. Scout allows you to harvest creatures, but before you can harvest them you have to kill them
If you become a scout and a serious crafter, you probably won't have enough skill points for more than one combat profession. Therefore, go straight for an elite profession--not for Master Marksman or Master Brawler. An elite combat profession will make you a much more effective scout, and of course it will open up more content for you.
As for Artisan, it's rarely and end in itself. My recommendation is againto start thinking about an elite crafting profession. Armorsmith, for example, would be a nice complement to scout, because it uses large quantities of hide. Also consider Chef and Bio-Engineer, because they use large quantities of meat.
BTW, I've been a scout since I started playing SWG. I've never given it up, and I'vemastered the profession twice
Have fun!

Bloodfin's not bad. It's focus is PvP, but it's still very populated, so you'll have quite a few folks to run into, and you've got me to pester. ![]()
Grinding = Going out and killing creatures over and over, or sitting in a camp getting survival XP over and over ... pretty much any repetitive (and boring) way of gaining XP.
Slicing = A skill that Smugglers have that allows them to increase stats/speed on weapons, resistances/encumberance on armor, increase payouts from mission terminals, and open locked containers.

Bantha,
Read the manual with the game for the purely MMO type stuff. Read my "novice scouting guide", and then the "From Novice to Master" guide for my advanced information.
And ask us lots of questions.
Welcome to MMOs - you'll never go back (unless you get bored).

Another thing to keep in mind is that some servers have their own forums up. Bloodfin and Warcry have some good reading material if you ever have the time! Good Luck!
