Thread: Maskscent not working at all...
So I'm almost master scout... just need to finish hunting and survival... all without maskscent. I'm getting perturbed.
Delta I've read you're FAQ and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I put up Maskscent and walk past critters that con blue/green/white/red/yellow/flannel and they don't spot me for anything. I can walk right up to them like 5m and they don't move... the second I let go of the shift key and walk away... "A creature has detected you despite you're attempts at camoflage."
No XP spams on the window
No rise in the XP bar
Nothing.
So though I assure everyone that Master scout can be achieved (at least almost) without Maskscent... I still want it to work ![]()
Any thought's on what I'm doing wrong?
And on another note... when are they fixing the running/foraging thing already?
Wild,
Generally, sometimes maskscent requires you to get out of the creature's aggro radius to trigger an XP award. At least, that's the way it seems sometimes.
Here's what I suggest you do. Buy a ticket to either Lok or Yavin 4 (depending on your cash situation). Throw up maskscent and start running around. If you can't get a lot of XP doing that, or at least get it once to prove to yourself that it works, I'm at a complete loss.
The forage/running issue is, from my experience, a server lag issue. Just nudge yourself a bit, and you'll be fine. I'll mention this to the Devs today in my update email.

for me on Wanderhome (at the Imperial Outpost on Talus) i've gotten over 4,000 XP in two days just from MaskScent. i use it repeatedly, and it works only about 10% of the time, but it's worth it when it does. As i hunt the Dalyrakes for 150+ XP a piece, for every 8-10 i kill i also have gotten about 250XP from maskscent when it works once in awhile. it's like two free kills!
just be patient and do not attempt to use maskscent to achieve your goals, just allow it to be a nice surprise from time to time, kinda like a bonus to help you along.
Wild, from reading your post, I think I know the problem you are having. You said they you have walked up to all kinds of creatures "conning" different colors. This is a part of the game, and MS, that can be confusing.
/Con a creature shows you how difficult it is to you, by the little sundial icon next to the HAM of the target. This does not have anything to do with MS. This only shows how difficult the creature is for you, and the more difficult ones will give you more xp for everything, including a successful MS.
What determines getting an xp hit from a creature for MS, is it's aggresivness. The colors of dots in your radar tell you when something is aggressive. A red dot means it's aggressive, and may attack you for no reason other then being there. THESE ARE THE ONLY CREATURES THAT CAN GIVE YOU AN XP HIT FOR MS.
So if you walk up to a creature that "cons" red, meaning very difficult for you, if it's yellow on your radar, it won't give an xp hit for MS. The problem is with MS, is that any and all creatures, not just red on radar ones, can cancel your MS. Giving you the message "A creature has detected you despite your efforts to MS". One of the changes they are trying to make, is so that only aggressive(red dot in radar) creatures can cancel your MS.
Hopefully this helps you out. Most planets, don't have many aggressive creatures on them. Lok, Dothomire and Yavin 4 are ones with a lot of aggressive creatures, and thus its possible to make a lot of xp there, IF your MS actually holds up against them.
I feel your pain, Wildbil. I, too, am having problems with MaskScent. I have never once received exp from it and I'm almost through Exploration 4. I turn it on and run around reds, but I always get detected in a couple of seconds. I read Delta's guide, but it still didn't help at all. Ugh...

I've tried on Red hostiles AND Red conned... which is what's weird. A hermit spider for example. I can maskscent and walk right up to it, so close I cout probably pet the darned thing with nothing happening.
Currently they are Red on my map and Blue conned. Essentially according to Delta's FAQ it should be gaining me some XP. They're close to my level and SUPPOSEDLY aggressive.
The weird part about this... which may be a bug causing all this... Is I've never had a CREATURE aggro on me without my opening fire. Red, or yellow. Only Thugs will attack me unprovoked. This is without MaskScent active. Plains Cats, Burgs, Capper Soldiers etc... unless I'm grouped.
I also had an experience last night after posting, where I spoke to two other scouts who claimed that MaskScent has never given them XP, it only prevents them from being attacked. I'm going to follow all you're suggestions and see what happens though today just to see. I'll get back to ya.
I've recently started to use mask scent more, to see exactly how it works for my character. Basically it really stinks.
Any yellows (agro) will see through it in no time flat.
Any red (agro) above blue (con) will see through it in no time flat.
The only thing that teaches really well that follows the above rules are Kreetles, little buggers teach scouting if you have a successfull mask scent up.
The only one I have found so far that does not follow above rule is the mutant wamp rats...Red (argro) hmm think they are yellow (con) depends on the weapon in my hand at the time. They sometimes see me, sometiems don't. When they don't I can get 112 scout exp from them.

it looks to me like you are a high lvl scout, am i right? i think that your problem may be that the low level creatures give no xp for maskscent as you rise in the profession. i have noticed that kreetles were giving something like 115 xp when i first got ms. when i got to lvl3 explore they were only giving 13xp. when i finally got lvl4 explore i have not gotten one xp from them. they will not aggro me and i can stay in their midst as long as like as if i was not there (the point of ms in the first place). you need to try high lvl/dangerous creatures. the risk is of course much greater, but they seem to dole out the xp for ms regularly. good hunting...err...maskscenting
Maskscent is working pretty well for me as long as I am about -10 or better on my hit modifier display. XP pops up fairly regularly when I'm doing this.
I think I found the problem last night. After SEVERAL, and by that I mean TONS, of unsuccessful attempts I finnaly managed to score a hit while dealing with some vicious squalls. It appears as though creatures on Rori that are marked as aggressive or hotstile may not actually be. Some of them just won't attack no matter how close you get. (And yes I'm talking creatures that are red on the map not red conned.)
It must be a bug.
