Thread: A tip for you from an Artisan
I actually have two tips to offer you scouts;
1. When collecting your hides and bones, with the intention of putting them in the bazaar, it is better to put them in piles of 500 or at least in bigger piles when possible. An artisan often uses 30-40 hides on one single object and alot of us hate switching types all the time. When I shop for hides I dont even look at containers of less than 200 and even that is only if I am desperate.
2. Get to know something about the qualities and traits of your product and what it is worth. I find it laighable that I see piles absolutle crap hides offered for 5-8 credits per unit. All that does is clutter up the bazaar terminals. If you look at the artisan boards and see whet the relative values of each trait are, you will have a better idea of how to price your containers.
I hope this helps you some.
While I know you want the quality hides for creating GOOD products.. are you usually looking to make quality items or are you usually just looking for hides to get up your crafting experince?
I totally agree that the price of the hides being sold should refelct the quality.. but isn't there a place in practice items for hides of less quality.
Has an artisian what would you say are the best quality's to look for in a Hide? Which is more important Decay rate or Over all quality? I've seen hides with 800 something decay and only 14 quality..
Well, I suppose that there is a place for crappy hides to practice on, but I try not to make and sell things that are junk. If I am making junk for XP, I dont even produce the item, I instead use the practice mode. But I am not about to pay 5c for those hides (I might pay like 2c). I am not a power gamer/leveler and I usually don't bother making things just for their own sake. I try to always make quality items.
As for the qualities of merit, I am an armorsmith and I look at decay, mal, and OQ primarily, but I wont use any hide that has even one quality that is below 100, otherwise I have a "great success" that ends up providing very little protection, or is so encumbering as to be useless. I am not sure what qualities are most desirable for a taylor, but I doubt that shock and toughness are as important in clothes. I also prefer a well rounded hide to one that is awesome in 4 areas and 13 in another. I'll take one that is all in the 300-400 range over one that has 125-450-919-173-880. That is just my preference, I am sure others would disagree.
I was starting to wonder if hides don't have low stats by nature of it being an hide.
In other words are certain stats on hides always going to be low, espcially if it's a certain type of hide (Wooly, leather, scaley) or do the stats on any type of hide have an equal chance of being good? Does it really depend on what is dropping the hide?
I think hides are treated sort of like resources.. and not sure about this.. but don't hides rotate like other resources as far as the quality of what drops?
Yes, they seem to rotate on a similar schedule to minerals and such.
I suspect that there is some randomness to the type of hides available each week, but I do know from experience that there ARE hides that have good numbers in all stats, I have some.
what types of hides are those with the good all-around stats, if you don't mind?
That way some of us can at least get an idea of what planet to hunt on maybe...

1. I've not looked at every profession to see what kind of discussion goes on but surely we should have a thread like this with professions reliant on others / each other. We need feedback from Artisans to help with this because I'll use my below par hides for camps etc and my quality harvested products for the market. How about asking your fellow Artisans to draw up a list for each Elite profession on what they want so we've got an idea.
2. Now the Master Scouts... does Tougher NPCritter = better hide/meat/bone? Or just quantity rather than quality necessarily?
It isn't really practical to make a permanent list since the list of hides available at any given time is like 4-6 different types per world and they change all the time.
As I said before, at least in my opinion and in the opinions of those artisans with whom I have discussed this, the best hides are A) well rounded, and B) have no stats under 200.
Now for those who make clothes, I think the primary purpose is appearance and that means less dependence on some of the stats, like shock and toughness. For an armorsmith though, somthing high in overall quality and decay resistence and malleability will be easy to work with but if the shock and toughness are low, it will be an easily made armor part that offers little or no protection.
Another person I know uses a simple method for picking hides, she adds up the total value of all the stats and that is what she goes by although she also wont work with anything that has any stats under 150.
In general, I would say if the hide has 2 stats under 100, it is absolute crap. If it has 3 or ore stats all under 300, it is proably crap unless the other two are like 900+ and even then that hide will only be good in certain applications.
I hope these ideas, guidelines, and concepts are of some help to you all.
