Does anyone know what the difference is between these to stats when examining a creature?

Notu,
While I don't claim to be an expert, this is how I recall these issues being explained to me.
Special protections are special areas that this creature is especially good at deflecting. For example: if creature X has a 30% special protection for "acid", that means that 30% of the acid damage your weapon does (if your weapon does the damage) will be absorbed by the creature with no damage.
Effectiveness is the opposite. It means that a creature is more effective at doing this sort of damage, especially if the enemy has a weakness in that area.
I hope this make some sense.
