I havent tried fishing since the patch, but here is how I had the best luck.

First cast the line and dont do anything until you get a message that says "BITE". Ignore the nibbles, they tend to be teasers as best I can tell.

When you get the "BITE" tug left, right or up. I usually use up unless I am having just really bad luck.

If after that it says you caught a fish do the small reel in, and it will usually take it from there.

FYI. I hope you have a lot of bait. My first fishing trip I went through bait like it was nothing. Also after you catch the fish dont forget to Filet it so that you can get more bait from the chum.

Hope this helps.

Post patch fishing:

Now, (and this is great) your fishing stats (when you actually start fishing) give you info on fish density and vegetation density. Fish density is self explanatory, I'd guess the higher the veg, the more chance you have of false nibbles, or lost bait?

Also, +nibbles+ don't seem to be teases anymore.. I'm almost guaranteed a +bite+ (fish density **** and no veg where I was) if I tug left or right after the +nibble+, and almost guaranteed a +caught something!+ if I tug again after the +bite+. I ended up with a lot of fish

Every once in a while, when you forage, you'll get something called 'something bait'. That will be fishing bait.

Either grub, insect, you get the idea.

It took me a while to figure that out too

If you're lazy, you can buy some on the bazaar too.. THere's occasionaly bait up there.

Oh.. and when you catch a fish, click-hold on it till you get the radial menu.. and then three's this nifty little 'fillet fish' option... You get a bunch of 'chum bait' (more fishing bait! Woo!) and a small (depends on the fish) stack of 'fish'. Get enough 'fish' of good quality, and there are chefs (and when they're fixed, bio-engineers) that'll pay good money for it.

When bored of the hunt, kick back, put on that sunshade hat, and go on a fishing trip. It CAN be fun.. Really Best if there's someone with you though... Otherwise you can go slowly crazy... I've caught myself yelling at the monitor as that 'big one' got away

I had a friend give me some fish meat a few days ago... perhaps it's just because I'm not high up on the Chef tree, but I wasn't able to use it for any "fish meat" specific recipies... And I guess the stacks of meat from fish are all different types of meat.. thus they are in small stacks, many combines need a minimum of 5, if not more like 20 identicle items.
