While standing in the buffline... I thought I'd put together a little primer for our new / apprentice scouts.
- Special Ops Field Pack: Camo +5, Foraging +5, Melee Def +3, Ranged Def +3. This is a skill enhancing item which does not decay. Plus it will hold the following items very well
- Veghash: Good Veghash can get you upto a 35% bonus in your harvesting modifier. There are other Great scouting foods... I just haven't really needed them as much.
- Bio-Clothing: For a pretty low price (assuming you can track down the tissues yourself) you can get a good suit of +25 camo, +25 Maskscent clothes. These will come in very handy for slipping by the big and uglies.
- ScoutingDroid: Make sure you get one with storage, and some decent combat skills.
With the veghash you might not use this droid as much, because you get a better bonus from the veghash, but it always helps to be able to have something to harvest while you run away.Veghash bonus does not appear to stack with Scout Droid Bonus. I cannot confirm this only because I'm a master ranger and hit the cap pretty easily when eating veghash. - Pet: In the event of an unwanted aggro (Maskscent breaks maybe) you want something to throw to the wolves... or huurtons... a mid level pet like a Kaadu works nice to slow down any followers while you beat feet.
- Armor: Something with a high kinetic resist will do. I usually use Ubese for this. But depending on what your fighting you might even consider Mabari or Bone. Delta has some good suggestions on this in his novice - master guide.
- A weapon of course:
That's all I can think of for now... any other suggestions?

Thats a great list. The only thing I can think of to add is a general crafting tool and some resources (I know you can get organics with /harvest, but some higher level stuff requires metal). You never know when you'll want to make a camp or trap. Or, maybe just add phecnacine darts and glow wire traps, the most useful traps we have imo.

Survival Knife: quite honestly this isn't very useful...but hey! it's just cool to harvest something while it's in your hand....... *wince*
a single #10 Firework: Because sometimes you just HAVE to be the beacon *grin*

I have some issues here -
Pet - best be a droid. Droids work ok, but pet pets, like level 10, are freaking useless. No CH here, I fight my own battles, ergo, my pets blow - I use droids.
Scouting droids - freaking useless - seeprevious posts. To sum up, that which does not fight, yet runs away so you gotta find it, is useless. I have a droid out, it fights, no harvest, I can harvest. Spend your money wisely, a duplication of effort is silly.
Armor - why? You sorta dumb and don't know how to move out of the way of charging creatures. Do not your Pdarts work? I do not wear armor, never have, won't unless it is PvP. Aside from the encumberance, you gotta buy it (creds) and replace it, more creds. Useless. Learn tactics, know how to draw out one creature, how to take down lairs, and you do not need armor
What I would add -
Novice medic - Stim Bs. You get good meat, trade to a doc for free meds.
Food stims - steak, citrine cake, brandy, aggamar (or something) - I solo big stuff and walk away unscathed.
My opinions - I use tactics, I use my feet and my head, I kill lots of stuff and spend little money doing it -

I guess my recommendation is something to tank if you get in over your head. Whether its a faction pet, a tank droid, or a mount, it all comes down to tactic.

For the Novice scout a harvesting droid is a really smart investment. Using the droid, rather than harvesting yourself, can give you a pretty decent bonus to your harvesting modifiers. I've seen reports that range from 5- 15% and personnaly own a droid that claims to give a 34% bonus. Though I believe that to be an erroneous listing. What makes these droids so helpful, is that in one purchase they can give the novice a continual boost in their mods, unlike veghash which needs to be purchased over and over and can be expensive if not difficult to find. For the Ranger this droid is not as useful unless you're trying to save some cash.
Armor - why? You sorta dumb and don't know how to move out of the way of charging creatures. Do not your Pdarts work? I do not wear armor, never have, won't unless it is PvP. No, I'm not dumb, but I do have a tendancy to get in over my head occasionally. Last night I got stuck having aggroed 4 baddies. Not having my armor on, my options for escape were quickly and definitevely limited to the good old Clone highway. For the novice scout, getting used to food bufs, being ready for Buffs to fail, and dealing with unwelcome aggros, Armor can mean the difference between Re-Insuring and getting away.

Great Suggestions here.

Let's talk armor
Good armor is expensive, works to a point, then falls apart or you repair it and then it falls apart. Wasn't all that long ago Brisc was bemoaning the fact he was always broke, having to buy new armor (guess he was a wee bit slow in moving out of people's lines of fire). At about 50k (on my server) for a decent, not great set, you are talking money. For that money, I can get a lot of food buffs. Why food buffs - doc buffs are 10-12k, last 3 hrs. I don't usually have 3 hours. If I do get buffed, then die for some reason, I am out 10k. Good food buffs help a lot, are cheaper, and suit my times playing.
Anyhow - Ubese is good. Good kinetic, which is 90% of the creatures. However - your regen times go into the toilet. I have targeted unbuffed but armored people in PvP and laffed at them, as armored they take forever to regen HAM.
Next, and you can try this - Run with and without armor. You are somewhat faster without. Speed can keep you alive too.
Traps are what keep me alive. I know how to pull one creature from a lair, but sometimes it don't work as advertized. I always always always PDart the first one in range. (I don't use admesh or I would prolly throw one of those). Ok, #1 is slow...move and switch, PDart #2.... engage. The trick is to Pdart and not shoot, it lasts longer. Engage the closest quickly and move. Using TN is imperative, move up and downslope a lot. I found running thru ravines on flat ground gives you a decent lead even. Out of their range = safe.
Finally, armor doesn't "feel" right for me. Yes, I wore body armor when forced too. Hot, cumbersome, hot, heavy, hot, smelled... not fun. I just don't think Scouts/Rangers need armor, unless they are melee (and thats another whole topic).
JB
Btw, the bio clothes --- best thing since PB&J sandwiches. Get stuff that adds defenses as well if you can afford it. Combat bleeding, melee defense - and if you are medic, some that adds wound speed and treatment.

What can I say - I'm a PvP whore. I need good armor. And I spend way too much on it.
You guys would not believe how fast I can through a million credits. It's obscene.

Many need it, and not only for PvP.
Tactics and JBmats precious traps aren't the all around solution as most of us know (nightsisters or high-end dungeons like the death watch bunker or the corvette and even not-so-high end like the geonosian biolab etc pp... nothing that can be handled unbuffed and unarmored on a reasonable base).
My Ranger usually carries multiple sets of armor each 'optimal' for the thing I do be it creature hunting, high-end PvE or PvP.
For those ignoring a lot of the PvE-content in this game unarmored/unbuffed might work all the time, admitted. But for the majority of us, it simply doesn't work out.
However about the initial list: I don't like the look of the spec ops field agent backpack and the two mods that it offers that I cannot also get from the lightweight military backpack aren't interesting at all for me (I use maskscent, not camo. And I think I have foraged the last time three month ago to get some intial bait for a fishing trip) so it's that one for me :-).
And I don't use a pet, I own a slightly overpowered (heh) cl7 gurreck that for some reason seems to slip through the invalid pet check, I don't use it in combat. I'm melee-ranger, I can tank good enough myself.

WildBil2Me: veghash DOES stack with my 106 rated harvesting droid. I generally get another 10% on harvests with veghash AND the droid. I'm a 4/0/4/2 scout right now.
