Thread: Why Fishing is not popular (Response to Dev comments at FanFest)

Quoted from ArthurDent's fanfest report:

I asked him about the availability of fish, and he acknowledged that this was a problem and stated that "we need to find a way to get more fish into the game" and that they were surprised and dissappointed that there were not more fisherman in the game.

I'm not surprised at all, and I'm going to give a little background and then explain why.

I played UO for 3 years and in that time I had (among many other charactes) 3 GrandMaster Fishermen with various support skills. I loved fishing, I even fished when I played EQ. Virtual fishing is something I find very amusing and relaxing and exciting depending on events. (I even have the Bass Fishing Duel game for the PS2 - yes, I am that sad.)

Fishing in SWG? Bah!

I came to this game, heard it had fishing, couldn't find a rod so took novice artisan JUST so I could make a rod. I then trained Scout JUST so I could fish. Then I went fishing. It was disastrous, not at all intuitive, not at all fun.

I read and studied Volsted's excellent guide (have hardcopy here) and went out again. I fished successfully, I caught lots of fish, I hated it.

It is just too silly and fiddly.

I know UO is old hat, but someone PLEASE send the devs off there and give them a fisherman each and a free boat (yes, we had boats) and let them head out to sea for a real 'virtual fishing trip'.

We used to catch Sea Serpents and have to fight them for a 2% or so chance of a treasure map, or maybe a coloured fishing net that (when cast) could summon Kraken for a guild hunt to fight from the ship. We could catch huge quantities of fish quite quickly, almost as fast as you can collect Kaadu meat with an Elite Combat professional doing missions.

Everyone 'ate' fishsteaks (you had to eat in UO..) because it was a readily available filling resource. Chefs used fishsteaks in some recipes, Pets ate fishsteaks or raw fish, etc.

Fishing was a fun profession with a real purpose in the game.

Compare that to SWG Fishing. You get small quantities of a resource and it feels like a grind getting it. It is just NOT FUN!

Make it fun and people like me will do it more often. I still go out and fish in SWG every couple of weeks, then remember how boring it is and put my rod away again.

I'm very disappointed with Fishing here. Please, make it fun! Take out the fiddly 'tug up, tug left,..' rubbish and just let us go and catch fish for fun, rather than frustration.

It's a game - it's supposed to be fun, not 'realistic and boring' *sighs*

purplewarrior,

that's great feedback, I wish I had your perspective there when this was discussed. Actually, when I talked with K about fishing he *did* use UO as an example, and was wondering "why is it popular there and not here?". Someone else suggested that they improve the fishing interface and he agreed, and a couple other people made the comment that "fishing was boring you need to spice it up" or something to that effect, and his response was "have you ever fished in RL?" lol. I have never played UO though, so I could not comment on why it would be more popular there than here.

K also said something about there being a desire to add "mini games" in places where there were tasks generally seen as boring. He used the example of dig-dug for surveying, but I think he may have been half-joking about that. Hard to tell.

Not much of a scout myself, but I was an avid fisherman in UO, the system they had there was awesome, people used to design entire templates around the idea of fishing. The reasons why it was so good was as follows:

1. No fiddling around with the tug this way and that way, just put the rod in and wait (it is supposed to be relaxing after all).

2. You had a boat.

3. There was a fair amount of danger fishing and some fairly hard mobs had to be fought

4. At Gramdmaster level, you could find treasure maps (MIBs), you had to goto the location which you did by sailing, then retrieve a chest from the ocean floor (Always filled with loads of goodies and cash).

5. Some items could only be gotten through fishing most were used to decorated player houses and such.

Although Purple warrioir said most of these things, that was why UO fishing was great

The funny thing is - Raph Koster was the head SWG guy and he also was on the original UO design team.

Funny, huh?

Anyway, I agree...fishing needs to be more fun. It's going to be something that I add to my list of things that should be more fun (working on a new design doc for the devs while I'm surfing the forums).

Delta, this could be an excellent way to spice up the Survival and Frontiering skilltrees. Adding in things like a speeder cert that only works over water(open topped, and you can fish from it), fishing yield mods, frequency of catch mods, and at Frontiering 4 you could grant access to a quest that gives a badge and title of "Grandmaster Fisherman"

I never played Uo so i can't speak there.. but how about making more stats on the fish you catch (like the fishermens name) I knwo the code is there if i amke a piece of armor my name stays on it. Also how about size and weight of fish -- I would love to have fishing tournaments and guild trophey room -- instead my fiend ust went to a bazzar and bought them -- and says he couaght them.. stupid.

I also agree how about including fish in future ingredients for items. If you can make them a comodity people are more likely to at least try it.

I wasnt aware that you would be able to fish in this game when i bought it but when i found out i immideatly bought myself a fishing rod and some bait and head of to the closest, localriver only to try it out. I found it to be dull and boring so i gave up on it quite early.

I would love to see an development of this idea and if it was made more fun i would definitly fish alot more.

Seems like everyone who's responded so far also feels the problem is that fishing in SWG is just plain boring and/or pointless. *shrugs*

Maybe when the dev responsible for fishing gets back from JTL someone can point him at this thread and see what he thinks?

MM,

C'mon - fishing is one of the best excuses to drink beer out there.

I can't stand fishing in real life, because it's BORING. The only time I've ever fished in game was to help my guild build an aquarium. After half an hour I threw in the towel and concluded it was as boring in game as it was in real life, and swore never to do it again.

It's also a great to use up all the bait I get as a result of foraging for food, my main source of buffs (I'm the definition of "Un-uber"!)....

Fishing is ok to break up the monotony once in a while but it is not so much fun that I would plan ahead for it.
