Thread: With the advent of vehicles...

Do you think it would be advisable for meto drop Scout altogether? The only thing I have in scout is Exploration for the Terrain Negotiation...If I could drop that and Novice Scout that would be 20+ Skill points I could use somewhere else...it would be very useful. Would you suggest this? Or do you think I'd still need the terrain negotiation to get out of sticky situations (like running from a kryat lol). Thanks!

I wouldn't dump it yet. See how vehicles work out for you once they go live. If you aren't using any of the other skills given to scouts I would think you probably could get rid of those skill once vehicles are in.

Butter,

I gotta go with Gutter (ha, funny, rhymes) on this one. With mounts, at least, you run faster up hill than they do. My limited testing of my speeder bike on TC indicates that this isn't the case with vehicles, so this is all together a possibility.

However, also keep in mind that speeders (at least so far) are like pets and mounts - you've gotta be in a camp, a city or near your residence in order to whip them out. So keeping scouting just for the camps may be a good idea.

Let's just face it - Scouting is the best profession in the game, and no one should ever drop it.

I gotta agree with Delta there...

In all seriousness...terrain negotiation will have a new/revised reason for existing with the advent of mounts and vehicles. TN used to be what everyone dabbled in so they could travel long distances on foot more quickly. This reason is now obsolete except for newbs who can't yet afford a mount/vehicle.

However TN still has many valuable uses that keep it a relevant skill (from my own experience owning 2 mounts now):

1) When in combat you move more freely in rough terrain whether its for closing in quickly on a target, kiting a critter you just hit with a trap that snares or slows them, or just in escaping quickly. Burst running in rough terrain is still more efficient with TN skills.

2) For artisans/surveyors TN makes searching for high concentrations of resources much easier by allowing you to move quickly, on foot, between survey results. Keeping your pet out while surveying near your house can be more of a pain than its worth sometimes - especially when all you need is a few units of material to finish a product.

3) Many groups I've been in get around at foot speed because not everyone has, nor will have, a mount/vehicle. In those cases having TN has worth. Put your mount away and pull out a pet/droid instead (since we can only have one out after the next Big Patch(tm)).

TN will continue to make life easier any time you're on foot whether you own a faster method of conveyance or not; it just won't be a skill that's dabbled in as much as it used to be. IMHO that's a good thing. Instead of everyone feeling they "need" TN (as they did pre-mounts), only those who are dedicated to becoming Scouts/Rangers will get it (giving US the movement advantage in combat) or those who feel they will be spending a lot of time on-foot for one reason or another.

Its kind of like when people think high-level combat droids would diminish CH's since "everybody can own them". Its a silly notion because a CH/MCH can acquire and train as many pets as his/her datapad can hold for no monetary cost where everyone else has to buy their combat droids. CHs would continue to have more of a variety of critters at their disposal. The rest of us would be at the mercy of our local DEs.

Same thing applies to TN and mounts/vehicles. Sure anyone can own them, but we still have the advantage on foot by having TN skills and that's what makes it continue to be valuable.

Scenario - You are not on your swoop bike, fighting a beastie, and it comes that time when fleeing is the best option. Oh golly, you dumped scout, and you and the beast climb hills at the same rate of speed. Chomp chomp, smuggler lunchable.

Not a good idea IMHO.

I like running up hills faster than most beasts. Don't usually use burstrun as I don't have to. That little hillside gives me a lead and I use it to shoot and run. Killed many a beast this way, the old run in a circle and shoot method. Long as there is a hill nearby, I am good.

Well i never used scout...... until now i want to be a BH

I found that running sideways up a hill get you up fast enough...

and i ride a lesser bol everywhere and when i want to fight i just dismount and tell it to stay....

I found SWG without scouting easy to get around with running up hills sideways and mounts but its realy up to you mate

1 thing tho vehicals cant follow you when your out of them so everytime you want to head somewhere else youll have to run back to your car then go

..

Just see how it goes its not like exploration 4 is hard to get i just got scout today and i am

3/4/2/2 and i didnt even try hard

That's very true...I can get Exploration 4 pretty quickly if I need it. I'll probably keep scout for now but if I really need the SP I might try going without it (since it isn't too hard to earn back). I can really put those 30 points or so to good use in other places
