hey guys i recently had my computer crash horribly and had it reformated, aka purged it. now when i was downloading last night none of my characters were there!!!!!!!! do you think that they will show up once i finish downloading or are they permantly gone? and if they are gone cand i create some new ones am i still in the master scout club?
Julak,
Don't worry. That's why you are paying $15/mo to play this game. Character data is contained on the server cluster you are on, not on your local machine. The only thing you're going to lose are your game settings and macros. Your character and all your items are secure on the servers. The only reason why the client hasn't "found" your character(s) yet is because it hasn't talked with the login server to see who your characters are.
BTW, how long is that download going to take you have 8 patches to download? Even over DSL/Cable that's gotta take a couple of hours.

so any clue why they weren't in my character cue when i logged in? or do you think i will have to finish downloading before they reappear?
Oh, one more thing: After the download is complete run a Full Scan by clicking on the button labeled "Full Scan" at the bottom of the Launch Pad. This just makes sure you have all the necessary files to run the game. Otherwise you may experience some crashing to the desktop.

Okay, let me rephrase this. The green launch pad with the character select list is a program that does three things. It makes sure you are a valid user, it makes sure your version of SWG is the latest and greatest (making sure you have all the patches and whatnot) and it launches you into the game. The launch pad does not know anything about your character. But, what about the character queue up top? The launch pad doesn't know anything about your characters until the game (which under this install you haven't launched into) tells it who your characters are.
Since you haven't logged into the game, with your new install of the client, it has no idea who your characters are. So when you download and run a full scan then press play you'll get the Lucas Arts Splash screen and the SWG splash screen and the SOE splash screen and the intro movie. Then it will load you to the Blue Character select screen that you see when you do a /logout. This screen allows you to view your current characters, delete characters and create new ones.
Now, again, an important thing to note is right now this blue character select screen (for whatever reason) doesn't really know what your character looks like after a fresh install. So your character will appear to look nothing like you set him up to look like and he'll be wearing blue pants and a shirt and be bald. Don't worry, don't delete the character and start again. Just click on next. You'll load up to exactly where you logged out on and everything will be fine. Well, except all your game options, menus and hotkeys will be set to the default and you'll have lost any macros you have written.
This is exactly why I back up my profiles directory in the SWG folder. This is where all that information is stored. But, I have a very complicated hot key setup that switches weapons and panes on the fly and stuff like that.
As long as you were a Master Scout, you're still in the club.

Well, I was one, and probably will be again. I lust after the tracking line of Ranger.
