My question is once you survey an area, how do you get the materials out of the ground? do they need to be harvested with a huge harvester? or can i do it by hand? i am not gonna buy/build a survey device if i need to have a harvester as well.

you can get the resource out of the ground w/ your survey device, it has an option to "take sample." the prob is thatyou only get small ammounts and you can fail. if you only need small ammounts of a resource this is a good option, if you need large ammounts use a harvester or buy it from the bazaar.
