Get a higher CL and you can trap bigger things to get more XP faster.

Specialize. Marksman is freaking useless in and of itself. Pick one weapon and learn it instead of farming out xp to 3 weapons.

Are you having specific problems with trapping or is it just going slowly? The best advice I can give you is stuff you probably already know. Trap the highest level creatures you can. Check out WildBil's thread on this page about trapping, he's collecting a lot of excellent data that may help figure out how traps are working now and what the best strategy for leveling is.

Without a doubt P-Dart is currently our most useful trap.

the most exp i get from trapping things is 50, and i had to drop tkm and pikeman just to be able to get thatmuch. Raising yer Combat level will make it so u have to go hunt higher lvl creatures whom cant be traped, trust me i was in a group of 80hunting lvl 78's and i tried 20 times and didnt get one trap.......i am probly wrong, but the chances are low if not impossible. When i tried to make a ticket about it the CSR saidthat it was the way it should be on the commentary;and didnt really leave me the ability to reply. Kinda of annoying they just guess yer problem then tell u that there answer is right.

and the way i see it if u are lvl 80 its nearly impossible to grind imo. i droped my lvl to about 20-25 and hunted things 18-20 to get 50 trap exp which is about what u got from before the cu fromjust one trapbut now it can only be done once on a creature

Hi Vorpaks,

the gaining of the XP is slow but I think that might be intentional since the removal of the survival xp requirement. I have made a few progressions since my original post :

Scout 4/3/4/4 with Marksman 4/0/0/3 and Basic Pilot <CL15>

  • First major problem was surviving long enough against higher CLs to get kill rights and the traps xp

  • I have now worked out a system where I craft 2 of each trap available to me (8 types I believe at traps 3)

  • A friend who is Master BH / Master Smuggler will use a perma-root macro on a high CL (38 is the highest I tried so far)

  • My friend uses a low level pistol to do this and selects no default attack so that the critter is barely damaged

  • I am not grouped and so my CL 15 vs the CL38 counts and not my friends CL80

  • I then let rip with at least one full set of traps

  • The slow part is that I seem to need to do the majority of the damage to the creature to get any xp (weaps or traps)

  • Those lvl 38s were getting me approx. 650 Traps xp each
Now where I have my second major issue is that Scout is a basic profession (albeit the best one :-D ) and at this rate I will need to do this perma-root thing over 100 times at about 10 mins+ per critter. I already have 70k scout xp banked for the master block and to start my move for novice ranger but this traps 4 skill block could possibly gate me for a couple of weeks which for a basic profession seems a little unbalanced.

I just have a few questions for you at this point :

  1. Has there been any info from the devs to you on whether this is really the way trapping should be for scout ?

  2. Is there any way to calculate the max CL I can successfully trap ? For example, is it a multiplier against my own CL ?

  3. When you say P-Dart is our most useful trap (snare effect = sweet) is that from a levelling perspective or from a combat benefit?

  4. Another response to this post here suggested that I gain CL to go after higher critters but other posts are saying that doing that may cause me to be unable to gain more than 1 trap xp per kill if I pass some invisible CL to trap success barrier, what is your current take on this situation ?

I appreciate your initial response but since I am intending on keeping Scout as the basis to my template I would just hope for some clearer information on these issues to be passed to your from the devs and then posted here in this forum for others like me who are just starting out on the trek to Master Ranger.

Thank you for your time on this so far.

IMO, get some Dweezel, it's trapping food (hard to find though). Then go grind in a group, but don't actually shot the creatures. It seems that if you shot them, your exp is split between your weapon exp and your trapping exp.

I will look into thid Dweezel stuff so thanks for that tip but if I don't shoot the critter I am trapping then when its killed I get no xp whatsoever.

I'm at 65 right now. I usually group with 80 lvl guys.

So far I the highest CL I have managed to successfully land traps on has been CL38 (with me at CL15). Is there anyone who can confirm that a lvl 80 player can land traps on a CL80+ critter and if so which traps because from what I can see so far the traps seem to have some ceiling on them as to what CL they are effective against . I am basically trying to see what those ceiling levels might be on a per trap basis.

At Level 72, with +21 Dweezel and 4/4/0/4 Ranger (no ranger trapping except novice ranger) I was able to trap CL 82 critters with P-dart, noise maker and glow-juice. Got about 2K XP per trap landed. At CL 75 with 4/4/3/4 Ranger, I still needed the Dweezel to successfully trap CL 80+.
