My opinion
CH's are underpowered and get ate more that any other weapons class. The best you can have is 3 pets out, doing mainly kinetic damage. Pets suck in combat. They get slammed quickly and die messily. Sure, you can hunt paralopes all day and be happy, but who wants to do that.
First, master a combat class, ranged, melee, it doesn't matter. Mastering a combat class will give you more benefits than dabbling in three. Just master.
Get and keep novice medic. Healing yourself is important.
Pets = droids. Yeah, not quite the same, but golly gosh, no skill points involved. A first day noob can use a class 19 combat droid as well as anyone else. They are mean, nasty, can self heal, some have two types of attacks and they make great tanks. If this is what you want in a pet, get a droid.
Now. back to why CHs are useless. They use a ton of skill points to get 3 pets. Not many points left for much else. Oops, you just aggroed 4 Rancors, well, your pets did, and one decided to come after you. Can we all say lunch? As a Pistoleer I have a technique to draw one Rancor after me at a time. Rifles can snipe at them all day. TK go in and wah ping the snot out of the Rancors. CHs watch their pets get ate by them, then are powerless to do much else but run off.
As to PvP, pets are great distractors. Anyone with half a brain will find the CH, drop him/her and ignore the now static pet until it is time to mess it all up.
IMHO droids make great tanks, are easier to control, cheaper in the long run, and as they take up no skill points, a smarter investment.
If you want to solo, good luck, pets won't help you much.

Excellent advice as I have been looking at the skill tree and it seems to be pointless. You are a pistoleer. Anything else?

I'm a CH, have been a master, working my way back up to it, and unfortunately JB is correct.
If you plan on being involved in PvP at all, CH SP is wasted. Creatures do not take mitigated hits like players in PvP, so they die in about three to four hits. Not much use at all.
CH is good for up to medium level NPC/mobs in PvE, but beyond that they're not the tanks they once were. They were drastically nerfed in pub 5 and they've never been the same. The crybaby melee classes got their wish. Now they're the tanks, not the critters.
You need one strong combat line. As JB indicates, doesn't matter which one, just find the one you enjoy playing the most.
CH is really now a RP/novelty profession. The combat upgrade/rebalance/whatever may change that by altering the environment in which the CH operates, but we really don't know how that will turn out. Way to early to tell, even for those of us who have seen the CU docs, even if we could talk about them.
My guildmates still love my critters almost as much as I do, but no longer for what they bring to the table in combat, which used to be more than enough reason to drag me on every hunting trip imaginable. Now it's more of a social thing, they like to be able to /pet the GSP. Which is cool, but the pets really don't make that much of a contribution in a group hunt the way they did in the first four or five months of release.

Well I am currently Master Ranger, CH 2224, Pistoleer 0043. I can agree with everything the others have said, 'self sufficiency' does not lie on the path to Master Creature Handler (nor even a dabble in it IMHO).
I will work to Master Creature Handler eventually, just so I can try a tame on some of the high level stuff out there, but I have a very strong feeling I will be dropping it very quickly once I get there.
A non-CH can have a CL10 creature, and the current BE'd L10's are awesome. They often perform better than the naturally tamed higher level (and I mean MUCH higher level) creatures.
As tanks they are fairly poor, as has been previously stated there damage being 99% kinetic sucks against most things (esp. higher level content) and forget PvP, it's a points sink.
So bottom line...my advice is give CH a miss

Depends on what u wanne do....killing mobs for selling scout ressources or more rp related...for rp it could be nice cuz u can build something like a nomad who travels alone with his trusty pets and challenge things coming along...but dont plan to make money with tamed pets...there is no market on most servers anymore...as mention before be´s can craft way better petsthat u can tame in the wild...so the only way to obtain money would be selling scout ressources...docs/chiefs/cms paying good prices for good meat...armorsmith will give u good money for good hides and bones...pets can be handy tanks while hunting and its very nice to call 3 lv 23 "enhanced be pets"...safed me many stims earlier on...i enjoyed my ch-times a lot...was a good way to come into the game...i traveled around the plantes, make some badges/quest/themeparks and make a bunch of ingame friends...

I have done a lot of Ranger/fighter combos including the Master Ranger/MCH role. And what I have found is that there are several survivable combos depending on what you like. TKM/Scout was a great combo because it allowed you to heal wounds and give yourself a small buff as needed. Plus the speed of the damage is intense and the amount of defense is pretty nice. You just have to remember that unbuffed you dont equip the VK's. Master Rifle/scout gives you a nice combo as well. Since conceal/mask scent work well with cover/conceal shot.
Right now I'm a master fencer/Ranger/medic. I have been wanting to fight unbuffed and unarmored for awhile. And this combo has allowed me to take out up to 8700 ham creatures so far with the help of a couple foods.I have the +20 melee def from the village and +15 Melee defense clothing/backpack and it allows me to stand up to quit a bit even unarmored. One thing thats mission is TK's ability to brush off poison and disease. Which is the problem when your stuck out on a planet for days with no medic around to cure your wounds.
BTW i just dropped CH in favor of medic to help not only with my wounds but also to be able to use a droid with stimpack launcher (needs to be loaded by someone with pharm4). When unbuffed even a 100 heal could be the difference between winning and losing

Ranger > CH
... assuming you have a master combat class (I like ranged combat classes w/ the scout classes.)
That's just my experience.
Edit: But yeah, for roleplay reasons, some people like CH. The novelty usually wears off though.

My template is in my sig, im there. I am self sufficient combating up to about cl 40 unbuffed and no armour.
My aim with this character was to be a rare pet hunter and this works well for this intention. I dont PVP at all, not interested since I play Planetside I get all the pure PVP actionI could want.
