Thread: NEW IDEA: Camp Cooking

This idea got me out of bed, because it's so cool!

The Basics:

As a Scout, we have the ability to set up camps and make a place to rest for the night. Now, an integral part of resting is eating and I was thinking it would great if we had the ability to cook over the fire in our camps!! Esentially, we'd be able to combine the different things we can collect into our 'mess kit' and create different, random, foods to eat now or later. Some of these food might just be 'flavour' added to the game to be interesting , but others would have some pretty decent benifits. However, all would decay over time and vanish completely once we logged off, to be fair to Chefs. This makes it similar to 'summoned' food in Everquest.

Things we could combine in the Mess Kit:

  • Foraged Items (Including some Medical Foraged)

  • Milk

  • Fish

  • Meat

  • Hide

  • Bone

  • Water

  • Floral Food Resources

How the kit would operate:

The kit would be part of the camp and thus, would only be usable while actually in the camp. I think the kit should popup and actually look like a round pot. That would be nice. Then, we could drag and drop as many items we wanted into it and click one of the cooking options (such as: simmer, stew, boil, soup, brine, etc). Each option would take adifferent amount of time to complete and would wiegh the bonus out come more heavily toward a certain thing. We could add any amount of anything we wanted, up to 20 items (stacked resources count as mulitple items).

The Payouts:

Well, the bonuses given should depend on what foraged and harvested items have been added. The better the stats, the better the food will be. Somerare food may only be made a certain percentage of the time when all the proper items are used to make them. This would make for some saught after foraged items. Imagine that!!

Wilderness Survival XP:

Damn straight you should get XP for camp cooking!

Misc:

I think we should be able to add wood resources to the fire to make it bigger, warmer, and provide a higher bonus to wound healing.

excellent idea. ive played other games where you could cook your kills over a camp fire. Why not swg?

Maybe that camp kit can add a slight bonus to chef foods too that are (reheated ) while in your camp. For example that re heated synthsteak adds a 5% bonus to damage reduction, or adds a few to the total amount of attacks effected. Thtas just a thought., but I really like the idea. Nice job

Not bad.

Where would we get the water, wood, and floral stuff tho? Forage, even medical forage, is hit or miss and that is a slow way to get stuff. We could buy it I guess, but that goes against how I play.

Not a bad way to waste time while grinding survival, altho I hate cooking and the Chefs will not go for this in the least.

Guess I will stick with Chef stuff. I ain't Martha Stewart or Emeril.

maybe also keep the bonuses close to scout. Stuff like increased terrain negotiation, better mask scent, bonuses to vs. creature combat, that stuff. This way we don't step too much on the chefs toes.

I feel so old - I remember us discussing something like this last year.

But it's a good idea. I'll make sure it stays on the list for when the Devs get the CURB wrapped up.

To answer the question of where we would get water and floral resources from, that an easy one! Pick up Novice Artisan and you'll be able to sample more floral and water than you can shake a witching stick at!

As for how the actual UI would work in game, I was thinking it would be easy enough to just add a radial menu to the camp fire itself. Simply click the fire and choose your option from the list.

  1. Stoke Fire

    1. Add Wood: Opens up a window to drag more wood to the fire

    2. Poke Fire: Makes nice cinders fly into the air and generates cracking, popping sounds

  2. Cook

    1. Soup

    2. Stew

    3. Simmer

    4. Fry

    5. Saute

    6. Barbecue

    7. Toast

    8. Roast

    9. Boil

    10. Gumbo

  3. Eat

  4. Reheat Meal

Pretty simple.

Example: Cook > Soup

A Window comes up and on the left side it tells you the amount of ingredients you'll need to add to the pot, on the right. For Soup, all you need put in is 8 Water, 4 Foraged items, and 8 misc items. So, you add the items to the right side of the window and then hit the 'Prepair Meal' button. The window disapears and a cooking aparatus apears over the camp fire. After an amount of time you hear a dinner timer go 'ding', at wich point you can click on the camp fire and choos #3, Eat. The 'output hopper' opens and you can remove the food.

I would also like to add that I think it is a great idea to give a 5% bonus to reheating Chef foods!

I like the +5% thing, becasue that would help make both professions more useful...unless they nerf doctor food by 5%...Then we better hide out for a while.
