There are a few changes I admit to not checking. One was the POI on Talus. My bad.

But some people have found, as I did, that you get X amount of xp for a creature. If you use two weapons, it splits as a percentage of damage you did per weapon. And if all you do is throw one trap, you get all that xp as trap xp - providing the trap sticks.

What players don't want to do and refuse to accept is that in order to level trapping you may have to drop some combat levels. It's like asking them to cut off a body part. Leveling is now a giant pain in the butt. You can't trap the big stuff with a low trap level and the stuff you can trap gives one xp. Not quite a Catch-22 but close.

New people don't have this problem if they are smart enough to level traps along with scout and weapons. IMO, put off leveling weapons and scout and only level up in traps until you are maxed. Or at least wait until you "have" to level because you maxed the xp cap.

And of course, I do realize the 90-10 rule is in effect. 90% of the whining is from 10% of the people. It's getting old though. Traps are our weapons, and we need to realize that. Weapons XP depends on CL.

Yup. See. There you go making me agree with you again...

up to a point

For the people who are being asked to drop combat skills to drop their CL, yes, it is like being asked to cut off body parts. But that shouldnt be necessary. For people who aren't 'power levellers' dropping most of not all of two combat professions is pretty much like saying "there's an easy workaround for this trapping thing, just delete your toon".

The angry bag system for creatures (critters aren't unique anymore, they're just bags of attitude with a different skin on and a 'fixed' amount of XP which is divided up according to how you kill it) has seen things like power levelling trapping by bombing the beasts with wire traps go out the window. It has also reduced the amount of XP per kill a solo player can lift off each individual critter and, with the increased XP requirements, that makes the previously easily strollable hill into Mount Improbable. It's not so much a progression curve as a vertical climb.

Like I say, for the most part I actually agree with you. Folk that are levelling up ought to do it 'evenly', folk who are deskilling have got to get informed before making the leap. So, no argument there.

With the next part I'm really not arguing 'with' you or trying to change your mind about anything, it's more that I'm bouncung this off you to help clarify my own thinking on the issue. I'd value your views on whether you think the following is fair, consistent, balanced.

Traps are our weapons, but they do behave differently from other weapons and, in a supposedly balanced 'fair' system, that seems to be an anomaly. We have a design variance in the models.

If we are going to class traps as weapons like all others then they have to be modelled to behave like all others. If we have a weapon that behaves radically differently from the other models in the game then that is going to create confusion and frustration.

So, if I am a CL80 rifleman/pistoleer with CL50 and I try firing a trap at a creature at CL80, it's going to miss. I will get no trapping XP. I could throw dozens of traps and still none would stick.

However, if I was to change to a different weapon type, one that I only had the lowest nominal certification for, say a CL54 sword, then I don't get a +MISS+ message coming up, I register a hit.

Now, I know that we don't have weapon specific certifications (in general) but what we are seeing here is weapons for which the same player has nominal certifications, but which behave in radically different ways.

The player isn't forced into dropping combat levels in order to be able to effectively use the CL54 sword, so, if he was looking to drop pistols and take up swords, he'd be able to do that by dropping boxes in pistols only when he needed to free up skill points to retrain in swords. He can't do that if he's trying to pick up trapping, instead he HAS to drop CL and in doing so also drops offence/defence and accuracy modifiers that could acversely affect his performance in the ranged prof that he's not messing about with.

OK, short furry guy here channeling SioBabble because he pulled a JB and called the developers a terrible name, in relationship to pushing pub 19 live with a known profession killing bug.

On that was absolutely accurate, but this is not a court of law. Truth is not a defense against SOE board mods.

He recently respeced out of master smuggler to master pistoleer and put some of the newly released SP from dropping brawler into trapping.

Like through trapping III.

He can't get traps to stick, he's tried Ldarts and Pdarts, against level 80ish mission critters. It's not a question of XP being generated, because the traps are totally ineffective.

He's going to craft some of the others and see if any of them work, but apparently the accursed level system has totally borked this aspect of the game. Not that the elf game brain trust cares, mind you. They only care about flashlights and Boba Fett wannabees, this much is certain. It would be SO MUCH BETTER if they'd drop the pretense and just change the name of the game to JEDI vs BH and get it over with, eliminate all the other professions, and bring it out for X Box and PS2 now. Turn the entire game over to the 14 year olds and the maturity of a 14 year old player base and get it over with.
