Your tactic is what i used when i started out but its kinda hard i found out. What you should do is kill every animal of the lair your attacking. Than attack the lair right away if an animal spawns attack it imediately so it doesnt heal its lair and so more down spawn.

WHen you get higher lvl and have better guns or whatever path your going you will take out lairs before there is time for a spawn.

I should have been more clear - any specials that hit another pool other than health - so basically carbine and rifle specials - won't affect a lair. Don't mindshot/headshot a lair is what I am saying, because it waste's your mind pool for no effect.

Also, don't move more than 128m away from a lair that you've already damaged. If you move too far away, the lair will "reset", including having the occupants heal it back up to full. I think it also replenishes the number of critters hiding inside, but I'm not sure on that one.
