Thread: What is the Intended Purpose of Maskscent? Why would I use it?
jmatt,
To the best of my knowledge to get Scout XP you need to turn it on beyond the 64m range and then close in to the creature (usually get XP around 40m or so, varies). To use it in combat I don't think it matters when you turn it on as long as it is up before when you open fire. I've run from one side of a lair to the other, passing meters from my next target, and they never seem to know where I am when I start firing. This may be due to my camo skills more then anything else because I tend to forget about maskscent once it is broken (Bothan's get an extra +15 to camo...big help).

Yeah its an automatic skill, Im assuming it goes along with maskscent.. I do have to say that after the so called "nerfing" of maskscent I had a lot of problems getting xp, but since I went to Lok I've been getting A LOT of xp. Normally I'd get like 20xp here and there, but now I'm getting 200xp every 3 seconds! The skill rocks as you get up there in scout (im almost a master). Thats my 2 cents

Okay, I played with this some more last night, and I'm not convinced that maskscent is doing anything for hunting, at least with a rifle. I would maskscent, then open fire with a rifle from 64m and I never, not once, got scout XP, nor did it afford me any extra shots on the target. I was 'detected' the instant I fired my first shot.
Is it possible that maskscent was meant for carbineers and pistoleers, to allow them to sneak in closer before opening fire? Because I don't see it doing anything for rifle users.
Aim, on the other hand, was quicker than taking a shot and seemed to produce results.
And as to camoflage, I believe its just an inherent skill. It's not an employable /command as far asI know.
>>> and conceal/camo yourself
How do you do this? Is this a /command I missed?
Jmatt,
Maskscent isn't going to help you when you are shooting at an animal. You get it for getting passed a creature without it smelling you and attacking.
Camoflauge is the base modifier that is used when calculating whether or not maskscent is going to be effective. So as your Explore increases, so does your camo bonus and thus your maskscent success rate.

Jmatt,
No - it's not a command. It's something that is automatically factored in when you get near a creature that's aggressive.
Sorry about my grammar today. I was up til 3 emailing with the Scout dev, after a night on Dantooine. I'm sleepy.

Then that is its official purpose? Big deal, I can do that now without it. So can a Chef or a Musician for that matter, without having spend 3 weeks climbing through the Scout tree.
I know that Ranger isn't worth going for. Now I have to question the value of some of the Scout tree.
The improved terrain negotiation is worth it, but unless maskscent confers some ability that others can achievewith no skilling up whatsoever, its pretty useless. The purpose of new skills is to give you abilities no one else has.

Jmatt,
The purpose of maskscent is simple: It is to give you increased survivability in the wild. It gives you the ability to move steathily. Where others would get attacked automatically, you have a skill that can let you (if you are significantly skilled) get away quickly and quietly without getting attacked.
Chefs, Entertainers, Tailors - they aren't going to be able to do that. Then again, they aren't going to be out hunting either.
I've been reading all of your posts lately, and you've got a lot of negativity - Scouts are honestly one of the most balanced of the classes right now, not one of the worse. If you want to see bad balance, go hang out in the Squad Leader or Chef forums.

Apologies, that was not my intention. Just trying to figure it all out.
Jmatt,
No need to apologize. Just have an open mind.
And keep posting - you're helping me out immensly with all of your posts.
