Thread: Lack of mounts in this game...?
OK I know this should probably be asked in the CH forum but as you are here....
If a non-CH is given a CH mount can theyswap it with an NPC CH trainer for a non-CH mount?
More to the point, I am not planning on Mastering CH, but I am working my way up CH to train my own mount (sort of for RP reasons) and I wondered if I would be able to keep my mount (or exchange it) once I start to drop my CH skills?

To extend and revise Delta's comments:
A Pack Master or a Master Creature Handler can train a mountable creature as a mount. A Pack Master is a CH who has all four boxes of the Creature Management skill tree.
Mountable creature types are:
dewbacks
falumpasets/humbabas
brackasets
bols
carrion spats
kaadus
banthas
cu pas
Note that there are non-CH and CH only mounts. For example, your plain vanilla dewback is a CL 19 creature, and thus cannot be controlled by any CH with less than a creature calling level of 20. There is a version of the dewback, the lesser dewback, which is CL 10 and any player can call out and use as a mount if it has been trained as a mount.
A BE can djinn up a non-CH version of most of these creatures.

If you are familiar with the American Civil War orRevolutionary war, then the idea of Ranger Guerilla groups on mounts should be familiar. They would be akin to the Tennesse / Kentucky mountain men coming down out of the mountains on horseback, causing confusion and chaos among the well formed lines of the enemy. They could seemingly pop out of nowhere in the middle of the wilderness and hit the enemy hard before they had a chance to use their numbers/technology advantage to any sort of success. Then, when the enemy finally grouped themselves and started to respond, the guerillas were gone, back up into the mountains. The British wouldn't dare attempt to chase them down on rought terrain and in their homeland.
That's what I see a small group of mounted Rangers as. It would be a beautiful thing to behold. Happy Independence Day, Everyone!

That is precisely what I see scouts/rangers as GCW wise. Not front line combatants, but guerillas, harassing, sniping, scouting, ect.

If you train a lesser plains bol, or any other CL 10 or below creature as a mount, and then drop CH, you'll still be able to call and ride that creature.
However, if it's a mountain dewback you've trained as a mount, once you fall below a calling level of 20 (mountain dews are, I think, CL 20 critters, but they may be CL 21) you won't be able to call the creature.
I'm pretty sure that the creature trade in program only works on creatures that formerly could be called by non-CHs (prior to pub 5), creatures in the CL 11-15 range. For mount critters, most likely these would be male or female kaadus, which are CL 14 and CL 12, respectively, and would be transformed into CL 10 vanilla kaadus. Keep in mind that cu pas (CL 11) are transformed into kwi in the trade in program, and kwi are not mountable, unlike cu pas. Non-CH cu pas and banthas are BE creations, not wild tames. There are no natural CL 10 or below tamable cu pa or bantha variants.

Ha! Speak for your self, I have one character with a CL 8 cu pa and another with a CL 10 brackaset. I like them, of course I've been know to do crazy things... like roleplay in a MMORPG!

Sojourner, /salute
I retain my mounts because I'm a CH first and formost, no matter what skills I'm doing right now, and because yeah, this is an RPG, and more of us should be RPing, not powergaming around in our AV 21s.
Just over the weekend I was part of a race on Ahazi to hit every planet as quickly as possible and retrieve key codes from bazaars. It took about 2 hours to hit all 10 planets and find the codes...the codes on Corellia, Naboo, and Tatooine were in non-starport cities (on Tat, Wayfar!). The race ended when we found the race organizer. We started in Doaba Guerfel, on Corellia, and the race organizer dropped hints during the race as to his location. He wound up in Mos Taike on Tatooine, which has no shuttle port and is 2000m from the closest NPC city shuttleport. After the race, we RPd that his speeder had been stolen, and he needed an escort back to the nearest starport...so, we all jumped on mounts and headed on back! It was great. We dodged(or wiped out)spice fiends, scyks, and other hazards as we moved across the desert from Taike to Entha.
I actually roleplay both my ranger and my CH roles. I must look funny talking to my pets and telling them "good job" ect. I care about their emotions since they exist to keep me alive. I treat them as friends and group members and not just as weapons. And as a ranger i dont think i should be shooting all over the landscape as fast as i can. If im tracking im better doing that from my Cu'Pa then my speeder.
