Thread: Scouts Against Urban Sprawl (SAUS)

I'm hoping most of my fellow scouts are as concerned as I am about the sprawl of cities and harvester all over the once open space on many of the beautiful planets.

So, I'd like to start Scouts Against Urban Sprawl or SAUS.

I'd like to see some sort of National Park system put in place so that we have large tracts of unpolluted land.

No buildings, no harvesters. You could camp, hunt, fish, and even sample.

The outskirts of Naboo on Flurry where once open and beautiful now you have to dodge house after harvester.

I realize there are currently no build zones but they only cover areas already near a big city.

I worry that as more and more people make the neccessary money that the urban sprawl will run from city to city.

Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you for posting this Borack!!!! I couldn't possibly agree more!!!!!

Please post this over in the Dev forums. I have nightmares of Naboo turning in a paradise littered with haphazardly placed homes and business andthesoothing chirping I can hear at night drowned out by the ugly whine, roar, and ka-thunk of harvesters!!

It would be an easy thing to do to marke off large areas unaccessible to 'development'-- but you KNOW the artisans will complain about it : (

Thanks again fo rposting this!!!

i am definitely for this. i am so tired of seeing buildings out in the middle of nowhere. i want nature to be nature. the devs need to allow people to build their building closer to town somehow. good idea, we should be the games conservationists. good hunting.

Guys,

I'll be a charter member.

But one thing I want to mention - we do have a couple of "national parks". They're called Dathomir, Endor, Yavin 4 and Dantooine.

One other thing. The sprawl seems to be basically within 2k of the cities with starport/shuttle ports. There are still some pristine areas around the worlds, generallybecause they areso remote that us Scouts are the only ones willing to do the trek to get out there. The Lianorm Swamp area of Naboo, the vast areas along the southern cost far away from Moenia and the Emperor's retreat, etc. These are great places to go out and wander, as you'll rarely see anyone out that far. And if you DO find a house, it's probably going to be another Scout's.

Those planets aren't really suitable for newbies are they? I haven't been to any of them yet.

You're right there is some space now but there won't be for long. When player cities come into play its really going to get nasty.

Say a player city gets made 2K out from Theed. It gets a shuttleport, a med center, a cantina, etc. Then people start to build suburbs around that new city, then the harvesters go up.

And you can bet cities will pop in a circle around Theed at 2K.

I have just a few comments on this subject....

1.) There should probably be some kind of zoning laws around city areas and general wilderness within aradius from the city. Only certain types of buildings/structuresshould be allowed tobe built in certain areas. Camps are not buildings, they come and go... of course I don't have much detail on higher end camp bases and such. The city councils would surely have a plan for future development and want to keep land clear for their use.

2.) If zoning laws are too far off or not reasonable.... a new weapon or fire trap would be nice such as "Molotov cocktail" which we can toss into the doors of these unorganized developments. Maybe the ability to squat and take over peoples residences when they are outside a certain radius from the security of thecity.

3.) I would think once you setup residence farther out in the wilderness, you would also have more problems with curious animals attacking, stealing goods, and damaging property. Maybe a Fambaa would sit on your house?

Exaxtly Delta. wouldn't be nice if Scouts could have the ability to construct Crude rustic type structures that would be semi-permanent. Maybe you could keep them in repair with hides and bone or possible harvested trees.

I agree with you completely !

Just a short distance from the cliff near Theed there are so many houses that it seems the player city is even bigger than Theed itself... You can even see lairs spawnings between the houses

Same thing on Tatooine. Just outside Bestine there are so many harvesters that I thought I had just entered Miner's Heaven.

On the other hand, I also agree that we Scouts are almost the only ones willing to explore the land. I have seen some nice ruins on Naboo. Stayed there for several hours and didn't see anyone. The moutains of Tatooine feel like Animal Kingdom... and Tusken Paradise.

Just feels great to be a Scout !

I for one won't be buying a house and I'll try to get as many people as I can not to buy a house.

Maybe we could get a log cabin, teepee,or lean to? You'd have to harvest enough wood, hide, etc. That was small and semi permanent. And if we could pick it up and move it that would be cool. No need to get XP off it. Something we could build ourselves, since we should be self sufficient.

And two scout houses couldn't be within say 1,000m of each other.

I see over on the Architect board that they are tossing around the idea of houses decay over time.

Just to throw my two cents in....Even planetswere you can buildwillnot turn into vast urban complexes. There are more buildable lots than total lots even a maximum population galaxy can use, thats one of the reasons that each player has a 10 lot limit. So yes, some planets might get a bit overdeveloped (at least by our standards), but we will never have to face a situation like UO went through. I think Raph Koster has learned his lesson, this time.

Amen. I was so saddened, upon visiting Corellia for the first time, to see outside Coronet the rows and rows ofchunk-a-chunking, smoke-belching harvesters alongside strip malls of shop after shop. It felt like the crappyoutskirts of LA.

Made me glad to be a scout, and hope Rori stays relatively undiscovered as it is now.

Maybe the Lorax could be our mascot?
