Thread: Hide selling... should I even bother??
Hello all.
I'm working on Master Scout for Ranger and I am usually kind of poor (not ATM but usually), so I have tried to sell my hides. I get a lot of requests from the usual artisan folks, but most tend to be reluctant to pay more than 4 or 5 credits a unit, even with Wooly hide or Leathery hide with OQ of between 850 and 900. The shock quality is low formost of these, but even so.. 4 or 5 credits a unit?? I sold off about 2200 Wooly hide yesterday for 9k creds... should I feel owned or this really what's expected? Because that's a lot of Banthas....

Dark,
I just got an offer for 50 credits per hide for 900+ wooly.
It's out there. Check with your armorsmiths and doctors especially.

Ok, I confess, I macro harvest... hit two keys and the hide is mine. I have been known to kill animals just for hides, half the time I don't even stop running, just hit the keys and harvest and go.
I sell my hides based on the player's professions, rank in that profession, and apparent ability to pay.
A noob pays next to nothing for hides.. a Master Artisan pays a lot more.
50cpu..wow... a fortune. I sell for 2-5cpu, have over 400k in the bank... I give some stuff away to make room for other more important things.
Should you even bother, yeah, help out the new people. Find a few, gift them some hides, you will make a friend for life, or longer, as I tend to die about once a day in this game.

Thanks for the feedback guys... I guess I'll keep trying. But I'm not giving away any more 850+ wooly for 4cr per hide.
Thanks again!

I find that selling hide in batches of 100units and keeping the cost below 1000cr for a batch helps them sell faster. Its a mind game you're playing with your "customers" that makes them think its more affordable, but if you sell 1000 units of hide for 3000 credits, there's a sticker shock. Selling the same amount of hide in smaller batches for the same per/unit cost will make it sell faster.
As an example, I put 1400 units of hide on the bazaar in Theed on Naboo for 4cr/u in 500, 500 and 400 unit batches (selling for 2000 and 1800 credits respectively). None of it sold for 4 days. I took all 4 sales down, split everything into 100 and 150 unit batches and re-posted it at 4cr/u and it all sold within 24 hours -- in the middle of the week no less.
Oh yeah...another hint...sales are better on weekends...but crafters sometimes get desperate during the week.
I've had little problem selling decent quality hides in stacks of 300 for 3k on the bazaar. I think the longest an auction has stayed up has been 3 days, but they all go. Meat sells well also.
A tip on meat - if something spawns exceptionally good meat, spend a little time hunting that creature. As an example, I've been doing a ton of bol missions on Dantooine lately, because the Dantooine herbivore meat is really good at the moment. This is in high demand among doctors. I've donated a ton of this stuff to a couple of docs in my PA, and sold a bit to some other folks to pay for my traveling costs (I've recently taken to touring the galaxy
).
One lair of bols is 9 creatures. I get 95 units from regular bols, 77 units from pack runners. On average, a lair yields between 650 and 750 units of meat for me. If I sell that relatively cheap (say 8 credits per, and yes, that is cheap for good quality stuff) to a friend, I get between 5200 and 6000 credits, on top of the 7500-8000 for the mission. So...for 20 minutes of bol fighting (taking into account downtime for healing pets between spawns), I end up with between 12.7k and 14k credits. Not too bad.
I also have a deal with a master artisan - I trade him wooly hides in exchange for crates of powerups. He gets what he needs (hides), I get what I need (a consumable, powerups, that I use regularly), plus I get the cash from running missions. It doesn't always have to be about credits.
Make a few contacts who need your resources. Watch your server's forum for people looking to buy meat and hides, and contact them to discuss details. You can find a lot of business that way, and can end up with long term "contracts" to provide services for folks.
I just make sure I list my wares on a bazaar in a fairly busy town and I split the piles into even numbers, usually whatever comes out to 3000 credits. Most of my listings sell in 24-72 hours. If a particular resource keeps selling really fast, I raise my price. If something sells really slowly, I lower it. My last batch of avian meat sold at 20 credits per unit before I got half a block from the bazaar terminal.
I sell everything of mine on the bazaar. Wooly Hide that has a OQ of 900...usually I sell for 10 Credits per unit of hide. I generally go there with around 1000 units of the stuff...split it up in packs of 100-300 and sell at 10cpu....and I come in the next day with 10k in my account.
The thing to keep in mind is that players will always want to pay as little as they think they can get away with. I recently had some 7.5k units of 950+ leather that I was looking to sell. As I have already banked 400k+ creds (with nothing to spend money on) I usually sell it off pretty cheap.
I figured I'd ask 7/unit for the stuff just to get rid of it and give some folks a break. The first 2-3 guys that asked about it wouldn't pay more then 2-3/unit because 'I can get it on the bazaar for that'. For them, OQ didn't matter, they were just grinding...so I was able to sell them some junk hide in their price range. Within 10 minutes I had found a buyer for the other.
Frankly, I could have asked for twice the price and probably gotten it. You just have to ask yourself, are you looking to get rich or do you just want to offload stuff. I have sold plenty of materials for .5-1/unit just to get rid of the crap as well. Often times, the space I save in my home(s) is worth more then the extra 20k I could have made.
Make it a point to find some architects who make and sell furniture. We need all kinds of hides for furniture and don't have the time to get them ourselves. Also we are making decent money once we reach a certain level and shouldn't be so squeamish about paying 10 credits per unit for wooly hides. That means that any furniture with hides that I had to pay this amount for, cost much more than the rest of my furniture, but most will understand this when they come shopping for that small or large bed anyway.
So try to get some Architect or Interior Designer accounts and just sell to them. You will probably feel that your skills and your hides are more valued by them.

Try doing these things, I did them and it worked wonders for my business:
1. Post on your galaxy board and every profession board that needs hides or meat. Let them know what you have in stock now and tell them to contact you with what they want you to get for them in the future
2. Do not list prices on the boards! All that does is start someone else saying "I sell them for less" or "those prices are outrageous!"
3. When you do find an interested party negotiate a price and amount with them.
4. Work with one person at a time. If you have someone say I need 10k of wooly, then only get the wooly dont work on anything else.
When I was doing this I was making close to 500k a week just selling meat and hides. I can tell you right now the best things are high quality wooly hide and high quality herbivore meat.
